After several attempts to try resolve the situation with tech support at Telus, Apple & Verizon I was left with no other choice to take my iPhone 5 to a Apple Genius Bar upon my visit to the US yeterday.

I described the problem to the tech support specialist. When I was done explaining the situation I was told that my case wasn't isolated as several other iPhone 5 users (about 4-5) had reported the same problem over the last 2 weeks.

He turned on my phone and looked up the serial number in an internal Apple lookup tool. He confirmed not only that it was a Verizon phone, but its lock status was "false lock"..

I was puzzled about that and asked how that could be as Verizon has, on the record, stated that the phone is unlocked. I was told that the phones wasn't completly locked by the carrier, and could work with other SIM cards.

To test the GSM functionality, the Verizon SIM card was swapped out and the Canadian Telus card was put it. The "Carrier" option was selected and network selection was set to manual. The phone then went into search mode - and as supposed to find "AT&T & T-Mobile", but after a long wait couldn't find anything.

With the GSM problem confirmed, the determination was made to swap the phone for another new one. The old phone was wiped in front of me and we ran the GSM test on the new phone. The new phone was able to detect the 2 GSM networks.yey!

I took the phone home and did a complete restore from a backup I had made before heading off to the Apple store.

It's been working fine since then. But won't be able to say the problem is fixed until I roam outside the US again in about a week's time. Only then will I be able to confirm if the phone can work.

    I'll keep everyone updated.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 5 on AT&T. I hardly think this is an att problem, as I had an iPhone 4S before my 5 and it worked perfectly in my house. As soon as I got the 5, I started to have the problem. It will go from 4G to No Service to Edge to just showing the bars and att. It drives me crazy!

Since updating my iPhone 5 to OS 6.0.1 have had no problem.  Turned my LTE back on and all is good!  Update seems to have resolved the problem on my phone.

    Cheers!

iOS 6.0.1 seems to have resolved my issue as well.

I tried a sim card from another provider (Telia) and there it was the same problem.

Well not really because Three only has 3G and Telia has Edge, but when my phone lost signal down to edge it got stuck there. So the problem seems to be that the phone never connect to 3G when it has lost it.

I called apple today and told them I wanted to return my phone which was ok since I haven't had it my 14 days try period yet,

    Ordered a samsung galaxy s3.

I've managed to solve my issue. My new phone case was causing the problem. So everyone bear in mind if you have a mental case it may be the cause.

Hello all. I have had this same problem. Go into a no service area e.g. building, basement, or general cellular dead spot for any period of time. mostly over 5 mins or more (I have had less), and my iphone 5 won't then reconnect to the network in a known full bars area.

I tried absolutely everything, and tested every change I made. I have.......

    phoned Orange.... No success

Phoned Apple ..... No success (had an apple genius (yeah right) call me. He didn't understand the problem told me it was a battery saving feature by design. I think he made that up on the spot to passify me. Presumed I was an idiot. I am not and I believe I have tested this issue perhaps more than any other on this forum.

Reset network settings, reset and erased all settings, reinstalled ios6.0.1 from iTunes, reinstalled from iCloud backup from a 3GS, restored from iTunes and let it sync, reinstalled iTunes and quickly disconnected before a sync. Redownloaded 6.0.1 and installed again.

Got new carrier settings from orange.

Let iTunes give me new carrier settings.

Tried switching on LTE, tried switching of LTE, tried manual cellular connection. Tried automatic cell selection. Tried switching off location services. Etc etc etc etc till I really felt all was lost.............

I had the phone replaced twice. Whole new phones.... Same issue.

It is not a hardware issue it is a software/firmware bug. I promise you. Read on....

I can do this troubleshooting because I have access to a guaranteed black spot at work. The technical apparatus room of a television station. Believe me that room is dead. No phone ever constructed has been able to get a signal in there. It is essentially a faradays cage. so what im saying is i can replicate the problem whenever i like.

    Then.........

I updated iTunes to latest version that was released just the other day and restored and erased and accepted carrier settings and to my surprise it has worked!!!!!!!

So far anyway ,,, I'm two days in but have tested the **** out of it. Mostly it reconnects back within 2 mins although I have had to wait 10 mins. bUt hey!! At least it coming back.

I will keep you all up to date!!! Thanks to all other people in this forum. I have followed this thread thoroughly.

So in summary. Get the latest version of iTunes that was realeased 4 days ago. And connect and yes erase and restore following every instruction like the idiots apple want us to be.

I have been an apple user since before the Internet existed. . Only recently have I had personal experience of the inevitable decline.

From reading your below post, it looks like I'm in the exact same case as you.  I have a new Verizon iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0.1.  Works flawlessly in the US on the Verizon network.  When I go back to Canada and put my Telus SIM in, I get "No Service".  Have you been able to solve your problem at all, or came to any conclusions?

I go to Apple, and they say it must be a carrier problem, I go to Verizon and they say its a Telus problem, and Telus of course says its a Verizon problem.

I've been pulling my hair out for almost 3 months now!! Any help would be great!

Both myself and my wife have iPhone 5's on the 3 Network (Three 13.0) in the UK and get these "No Service" errors with impunity. iOS 6.0.1 (10A525), Model MD299B, purchased unlocked directly from Apple.

We do get a relatively weak signal at home (1-2 bars indoors - nearest base station is less than a mile away cross country), but routinely lose the connection both at home and when out. Usually have to switch the Network Selection from Automatic to Manual, see the '3' or '3 (3G)' carrier, select and boom - 3-4 bars straight away. Switch it back to Automatic, and it will lose things again half an hour later or so.

Afflicts our phones dfferently and at different times, despite being in the same location.

If there is any firmware upgrade or any other test we can perform to help isolate the root cause, we'd be delighted to help.

She has three bars on her phone next to me, and I now have "No Service" at the same time! Moving the Carrier Selection from Automatic to "Off" doesn't even initiate a scan. Nor does cycling Airplane mode...

I've had my iphone 5 for two weeks now. Initially I had used a Finnish carrier Elisa. with 6.0.1. Then updated to 6.0.2. No problems experienced. Two days ago I changed to another carrier called Saunalahti, which actually uses the same network as Elisa. Started experiencing this "No Service" problem after visiting a garage where there is no signal for 10-20min period of time. Basically iphone just didn't connect to the network before using the Airplane off/on switch. I hope to see a fix to this ASAP. Basically this is an everyday problem for me.

It makes me sad to see this kind of really basic problems with Apple products. Apple, fix this soon!

I have the same problem in London (strong 3G signal)

As a phone the 5 is seriously flawed. After 2 replacement phones I'm giving up and moving to Android!

In my case, the same reconnect issues and weak signal, there was a simple solution.

I had to isolate the sides of the simcard, where the connectors on the sim hit the metal of the simtray. I used simple Scotch tape and the phone receives noticeably better and there are no reconnect issues anymore.
