Q: I want Front Row Back

I'm sure I'm like a lot of other people here.   I want my Front Row back.....

I listen to a lot of Podcasts, watch movies from an SMB share, look at my photos, oh and listen to music.   Front Row has done this for year after year, and last night, once I found it was gone, I wanted to go back to SL.  How can Apple think they'll ship the new OS without the media center (Front Row) which has been around since what?  2005-8?

Honestly, if this is some sort of push (on their part) to their iCloud crap, they are in for a rude awakening.

Apple should stop taking away our functionality.   This one step forward and two steps back is getting really lame.

Plus, there also seem's to be a lot of bugs.   new one for me is then I have my two 24" displays connected (3 screens total).  Once I plug my iPXXXXX in both 24" displays go back!!!   OMG  The insanity!!!

I have tried the trial version of Remote Buddy and it is crashing on my MBP.

    http://www.iospirit.com/products/remotebuddy/software/

"Starting with OS X® Lion, Front Row is no longer part of the OS. It is therefore no longer supported by Remote Buddy under OS X® Lion 10.7 and later..."

I have looked at the possibility of Applescripts but it does not look hopeful. Looks like I will have to be satisifed with keyboard control of Front Row for now.

Some sites I have looked at:

I can't figure out why Remote Buddy should crash on your MBP. It has always worked flawlessly on my Mac Pro, back in SL days, with Lion and with Mountain Lion now (version 1.21.1). I suggest that you write to the developer, who will probably be able to figure out what's wrong.

No optical drive with the new iMac so an even stronger case to bring back Front Row (to play MP4 video). The new Mac Mini has also lost the optical drive. Apple TV is not a viable substitute for Front Row on a Mac.

I suppose that during the next OS update DVD Player will disappear -  like Front Row did with Lion.

How does one voice this to Apple through the support network?

I want Front Row back, too.

Where to send product feedback to Apple:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/

But Front Row will not work with either Lion or Mountain Lion and we will not see it again.

And to really rub salt into the wound, the Mac Mini has 1 Thunderbolt and 1 HDMI port. The obvious use for the HDMI port is to connect to a HD TV. But then what - use it as a big monitor? As I understand it the Mac Mini lacks the interactive menu of Apple TV and, of course, it won't run Front Row.

Just installed iTunes 11 on my Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Not surprisingly I still cannot access music, TV or movies from the iTunes library (I have not tried to set up any of the tricks detailed by other users above).

It seems that Apple is supporting Snow Leopard and iTunes for "legacy" machines that won't run Mountain Lion.

Should I try iTunes 11 with my Snow Leopard iMac (where Front Row is running perfectly)? I am not in a hurry to do this.

Please post on this discussion if you have found iTunes 11 breaks (or does not break ) Front Row functionality.

    Hi Michael,

well of course you can try that, but I really doubt that it will work.

Front Row itself runs on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. The Problem is, that it is not able to read the iTunes Library anymore since iTunes 11.7. So that has nothing to do with the OS.

If you really want to make it run, you have to downgrade your iTunes to iTunes 10.4

But I have an alternative for you. I use XMBC now. It is free and not as beautiful or elegant as Front Row, but works fine with the remote.

    Greetings,

    Thomas

    Edit:

    It did run ;-)

Seems like something went wrong after upgrading to iTunes 11. Since this, the remote does not work anymore in XMBC.....

And if you want to make sure that Front Row runs, don't choose iTunes 10.4. Try the previous Version.

I have now installed iTunes 11 on my iMac  running Snow Leopard (after making a back-up so I could revert to iTunes 10). Surprisingly all Front Row functionality is retained. Music works. Movies work, including DRM movies, Top Movies and Trailers and DRM TV shows work... Phew

Whether it is worth "upgrading" to iTunes 11 is another matter.

It boggles my mind why Apple killed this program, when the Mac Mini is a perfect living room computer (aching to be a game console as well). They are sitting in a pile of cash and don't even know it.

I couldn't agree more, postnocomments.  I have the 2011 mini.  It sits in my living room plugged into my TV.  In our home it is the "only" way we have to watch Netflix.  Our children play games there, where we can watch them.  It's our hub for watching TV Shows and Movies from our collection.  It replaced a large desktop tower that was (not so well) hidden behind our TV, drastically cutting down on power, noise, and space.  So I just can't fathom why Apple would remove the media centre power of this mini power house!  In fact, just last night we watched a great movie.  So with such a great market just sitting around the living room, why is Apple making me stand up and walk across my living room to select/start/pause movies?  And don't say get a remote... my mini came with the Apple Remote right in the box.  I have to use it for Plex.  So why is Apple making me use Plex?

Now I figure I'll be upgrading my 2nd gen iPod and getting a iPad Mini soon, so maybe I'll couple that with a third party Air Server app and then stream from the iPad to the Mini.  But that feel's backwards to me.  Why house my movies on my mini, stream it to my iPad, then bounce it back to my mini to display it on my TV? (sigh)  Isn't there a better sollution?
