You need to talk to Verizon about this. Only they can authorize unlocking of the GSM slot.
Note that you can only use the iPhone with carriers in other countries, even if the iPhone is unlocked. You cannot use it with another US carriers.

The short answer is no.
Verizon can unlock the SIM slot for current customers in good standing. After they do so, it can be used with Non-US GSM carriers. It can never work with any US carrier other than Verizon.

No. You can't. Give it back to your "friend" and get your money back or sign up for service with Verizon.
