    Hey Dude,

    Its super easy,

Just connect your device. Open Itunes not syncing right?

Keep your device plugged in and exit itunes and then launch itunes again.

    Works like a CHARM!!

I tried everything you all have posted here.  Nothing is working.

I've disabled syncing for apps and photos.  I've restored my phone.  I've reinstalled iTunes.  I've left my device plugged in and quit and reopened iTunes.

Syns still fails to start.  what. the. heck.

Is this issue new ot the 4S?  I'm thinking about getting rid of my iPhone because of this, if Apple can't make stuff that works the way it's supposed to!

Stopping/Starting service worked for me. Shouldn't have to do that, though. Apple needs to fix something...

Just restarting ITunes did not work for me.

    Neither did disconnecting/reconnecting my phone.

Resart both iTunes and the iPad worked for me - no need to restart the PC.

Reminds me a bit when  General Motors issued a press release stating : If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

    1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

    2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

    3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

    4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

    5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five per cent of the roads.

    6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.  or in iTunes case there an unknown error -5001 has occured.

    7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

    8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your cr would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna

    9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

    10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

I had the same problem which I fixed by doing a combination of things. Step 1 - Right click on iTunes and select 'run as Administrator'. Step 2 - Select 'Authorize this computer' option from the 'Store' menu. Step 3 - Right click on the phone listed under 'Devices' and select 'Transfer Purchases'. This way I was able to sync all the apps I had on my iPhone 4S and see them in iTunes.

[FIXED] Closing all the apps, and not transferring purchases from the iPhone to the computer did it for me. It's a shame the firmware is so locked down and hard to control. Google FTW.

I had the same problem. I am running iTunes 11.0.0.163 on Windows 7 64bit. Thanks for all who've posted suggestions. This is what I did and it fixed the problem:

    1) closed iTunes

    2) configured iTunes to Run as Administrator

    3) unplugged the iPhone from USB

    4) plugged iPhone into USB

    Windows automatically launched iTunes.

    The phone now syncs fine.
