OK, try resetting the SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.
If that doesn't solve the problem, take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP for further diagnostics. What you describe is, obviously, not normal behavior.

Probably the sudden motion sensor. Do the smc reset like Clinton suggests, maybe you do it 3 times to be sure it "grabs".

Am I supposed to take off the bottom with screwdrivers and remove the battery?

NO!!! No hardware fooling around. See the section that says, "Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

I do not know whether this is related, but right now my macbook pro keeps shutting down at random moments when the charger is not connected. It won't start up without my charger.
I have done the SMC reset a few times, but to no avail.
