OWC sells replacement batteries for these system. If your computer was otherwise working properly, this would be a much smarter option than changing your notebook entirely.

Well, that is the obvious answer. I'm more concerned that this battery explosion, while the battery was still inserted in the machine caused damage to the actual lap top. Anyone know if there is a history of this? I'm just not looking forward to buying a new battery and finding out my system was fried because of this.
In your original post you made no mention of damage to the MBP. If you attach the power adapter, the MBP should be able to function, albeit at a slower speed, if there is no problem with it. The best course of action is to take it to an Apple store for a thorough evaluation.
I had a battery swell up on my 2006 MBP, but there was no damage inflicted on the computer itself. Though this is not often the case, swollen batteries are known to occur.

My wifes battery went on her 17" 2006 MBP last year, not to the extent of yours but if was definately buckled. Took it to our local Mac store where they replaced it for free.
Now her replacement seems to be doing the same thing, so I expect we'll try again at the Apple Store.
