The use of custom ringtones is a little different with the iPhone. You can download ringtones in iTunes, but the use of a downloaded song needs to be adjusted to use as a ringtone. The clip needs to be 30 seconds or less and then the file has to have the extension changed to m4r, from m4a, and put the ringtone in iTunes. Rather than try to describe the whole process, there are a number of free guides you will find if you google iPhone ringtones.

If you get this app, you can make any song on your phone into a ringtone, directly on your phone:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785?mt=8

    Requires iOS 6.0 or higher.

hi thanks for the info. i've tried it but didn't get far as it wouldn't let me change the clip time at all. it's 'greyed' out so can't be changed. thanks anyway. michelle

Garageband does alot, but Apple recently added the ability to make ringtones directly on your phone. Granted, overkill for what you want, but it works & integrates with iOS.

    Hi Michelle,

I use an app just called Ringtone. It has worked with any song I have attempted to use it with, thus far, and it does a great job. As mentioned before, it's limited to a 30 second clip, but all it entails is choosing the song in iTunes, it will pull it up in the 'player' and allow you to select the 30 second clip you want, then it will allow you to email it to yourself. Just pull up your email, download the clipping to iTunes and 'abra-cadabra!'. Just add it to you 'Tones' when syncing your iPhone.
