My wife's mid-2011 iMac (running 10.8.2) suddently stopped working when trying to connect to it as a guest.

It has a shared folder that had been set up to accept scans from a networked printer. Today, the printer could no longer connect via SMB. Further, when I tried to connect from my Mac Pro (10.6.8), I could not connect as a guest. I can still connect as a user (using her admin account credentials).

Nothing recent has changed on her iMac that I'm aware of. I've doubled checked her settings - File Sharing is on, both AFP and SMB are on and I can ping her IP and see her machine on the network. I just cannot connect as a guest - I jsut get 'Conneciton Failed' when trying to do so. The printer doesn't give me any useful feedback other than 'Could not connect'.

When I try to log in as 'guest' I seem to be seeing this corresponding entry on her  computer log:

Dec 12 14:08:21 Aidans-Computer.local AppleFileServer[1085]: Logged out 0x7fbad0815c00

And then another correpsonding entry on my machiine as:

12/12/12 2:05:55 PM Finder[147] SharePointBrowser::handleEnumerateCallBack returned 5

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Mike

    If you have more than one user account on the server, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

    ☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

    Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press return:

    sudo sharing -l

    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

    Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

    If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

    Hi Linc -

    Output below...

    List of Share Points
    name: Aidan's Public Folder
    path: /Users/Aidan/Public
    afp: {
         name: Aidan's Public Folder
         shared: 1
         guest access: 1
         inherit perms: 0
    }
    ftp: {
         name: Aidan's Public Folder
         shared: 0
         guest access: 0
    }
    smb: {
         name: Aidan's Public Folder
         shared: 1
         guest access: 1
    }

    name: Scans
    path: /Users/Aidan/Documents/Scans
    afp: {
         name: Scans
         shared: 1
         guest access: 1
         inherit perms: 0
    }
    ftp: {
         name: Scans
         shared: 0
         guest access: 0
    }
    smb: {
         name: Scans
         shared: 1
         guest access: 1
    }

    If you haven't rebooted the server since this started, do that.

    Delete the problem sharepoint on the server and recreate it with the same settings.

    Thanks Linc. That worked for connecting as guest via AFP on my Mac Pro but still no ability to connect from the printer via SMB. The printer is connecting fine to the Mac Pro via SMB but not my wife's iMac. Not certain if there's anything further I can look at?

    Delete the print queue in the Print & Scan preference pane, and recreate it.

    Nope - still no luck. I've set up the printer to send scans via emial for now. Not ideal but it's a stop gap.

    I've been over the settings between the two computers repeatedly...no idea why the iMac is having this issue.

    I might try some tests connecting from my Win7 machine to see if the SMB issue is somehow specific to the printer but I doubt it - given it works fine with the 10.6.8 machine. I appreciate the input.

    There's one other thing you can try that might work:

    OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system
