Q: Notes Disappearing!!

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have had a recurring problem with Notes disappearing.  I use Notes on both my iPhone and my Mac (Google Apps, not iCould) for work.  Many of my (new) notes disappear from both devices within a couple days of me writing them.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

    Hi,

    I am syncing my notes on iPhone with iCloud. When I open my icloud.com account in any computer, there are all my notes on the cloud, this mean, I have not any problem about this.

    My suggestion is: open www.icloud.com and sign in. There, write something in Notes and wait a couple of seconds (to save your new note with iCloud). After that, open your Notes on iPhone or any Apple device and check if the note is there or not.

    Another things are:

    *check in: Settings >> Notes >> Account, and select account;

    *check in: Settings >> iCloud, and turn on "Documents";

    *check in: Notes  >> Accounts, and select "All Notes" or "iCloud".

    Hope this will be helpful

    Hi Kaka,

    It had it set up the way you secribed and my notes are syncing OK. I think you misunderstood the problem: the problem is not that notes are not syncing, but that they disappear (sometimes) after you creat them. And this in my opinion is sync bug.

    I have not used Notes for a while so am not sure if the problem is still there...

    I am having the same problem. Had been updating a note on and off during the day on my mac. Deleted an old note. Then to my amazement - my most current note was lost. Tried to undo it - no avail. Gone!

    I wish the notes app had the new 'versions' functionality so that we could get these back.

    Really flaky now. suspect that it is a data integrity issue on iCloud servers or an issue with the sync mechanism.

    I switched to using the free Notational Velocity (nvALT) and sync through simplenote.com because of this problem. nvALT also has better functionality, and isnt' yellow.

    I had the same problem this morning. The note I made last week with the phone numbers for a new client I have to call today suddenly disappeared this morning from my Macbook Pro. I checked all my other Apple devices, and it was not on any of them.

    This is using iCloud for the sync, as I do not have a google account to use for this type of stuff.

    I managed to get my telephone numbers back by looking in the file ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/NotesV1.storedata on the MacBook Pro. The note was still there hidden between various other control information. The note itself appears to be saved as html, so you can try something like this (in terminal):

    • cd ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes
    • strings NotesV1.storedata | grep body

    Each note that is stored in the file showed up on a separate line. Interestingly, a bunch of notes I had actually deleted also appeared in the list.

    It is not a pretty way to get access to the notes, but at least I have managed to find the telephone numbers I needed again.

    I hope this helps someone.

    I am getting this problem too. New notes typed not long ago, just disappears. This is so unreliable, you can't rely on it at all. I hope apple fixes this problem soon!!!

    I having been having this problem for several months now. Everytime I think it is fixed, it breaks. I have probably 20 permanent notes. Luckily I backup everything to Time Machine. Today I went to notes, they were all there for 10 seconds, but after synching with iCloud, they all disappeared except for 2 I created yesterday. Right before my eyes! Luckily, just went back into Time Machine and retrieved them all. Very frustrating that this obvious bug is not being fixed.

    @AndrewDeighton: thanks for the tip. I have beek experiencing the problem since updated to Lion this summer. Since then I stopped actively using the Notes app, not being able to rely on it. Lately the problem seemed to be gone, and I typed a phone number in it. The note was there for at leas several hours and the next day it was gone.

    I was able to retive the note as suggested by searching ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/NotesV1.storedata file (opened it in Safari).

    The problem is exists for at more that half a year! Apple please fix Notes, one of your core apps!

    Disclaimer: Do NOT delete files that may be important unless you have all of your data backed up.

    I have been experiencing this problem as well, when I checked the console I saw the following:

    1/18/13 10:21:58.651 AM Notes[19546]: CoreData: error:  (External Records Support): symlink from path /Users/$user/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/Notes/NotesV1.stor edata to path /Users/$user/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/CoreData/ExternalR ecords/878ED510-AAA9-46EB-956A-0EC652676E12/.support/store-file : Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=516 "The file “store-file” couldn’t be saved in the folder “.support” because a file with the same name already exists." UserInfo=0x7fabb6091d30 {NSFilePath=/Users/$user/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes/Data/Library/CoreDa ta/ExternalRecords/878ED510-AAA9-46EB-956A-0EC652676E12/.support/store-file, NSUnderlyingError=0x7fabb60923b0 "The operation couldn’t be completed. File exists"}

    When I looked at that file location, I found an alias file called "store-file" and attempting to open it gave me a notification that "the file pointed to does not exist". I deleted the alias and it appears to have solved the problem.

    I am having notes disappear seemingly randomly. Very very very annoying, especially as Apple does not seem to acknowledge nor react to it.  Eventhough I like the simlicity of the note app, I'm now experimenting using other apps.

    Same problem here - just lost a whole load of really important notes stored via iCloud on phone and mac. Really annoyed at this and will clearly have to find another solution. I don't mind if software isn't sophisticated but I do mind when it randomly loses my data. This needs a fix, please.

    I don't know how this can be escalated up to get a response from Apple.  As you say, randomly losing data is infuriariting and unacceptable. Keeping customers on their products is very important for thier long-term competitive position.  If we all keep finding their miscellaneous products are less reliable than alternatives (e.g. maps, notes, iphoto ...) then the attraction of the Apple platform relative to Android reduces.

    As an aside, I have been trying Evernote but I find it a bit slow compared to Apple's Notes.

    Andrew, thank you so much! I was reading this thread full of despair after losing a very important note, but I was able to recover it using your information. I am very grateful you posted this.
