Just had the same problem. After much tinkering, tried cutting away a small section of a screen protector we added and which covered a small rectangular darker 'sensor' located directly above the earpiece/speaker. Once we'd cut it away we tried making a call and low-n-behold... it works fine!! Hope this is of help to anyone.

    Finally.......... a forum with answers.

I got my Iphone in july from verizon.  I have muted most of my friends, conference called near strangers, and speaker phoned my conversations in error.  Everyone told me it was me.
When i purchased the phone the nice guy put that protective film over my phone.  After going through this forum i removed it.  I then stood in front of a mirror and dialed a number.  When the line was picked screen.  I then replaced cover and did same....line picked up nothing changed.

I hope it is as easy a fix as just removing the film.  I 've never been more disenchanted with a product than this.

P.S.  i left my plastic phone skin on and off during the test calls and it didn't change anything.  It was the protective film that seemed to make the difference.  It really does cover up the small horizontial sensor that is located at the very top of the iphone abover the small round dot and the longer horizontal line.

Thanks for all the help and tips.  WIll keep you posted on whether this works.

First time I have ever left a reply so I hope that I'm doing this right.

I was having all the same problems, the muting of the phone, cheek hitting the speaker phone button, and your right !!!!  A great big pain in the butt. Hands down...  I have an otter box to cover my iPhone for protection. I never would have dreamed that it was blocking the sensor above the ear speaker. Well it was. Take your phone out, and then try it. Presto !!!  It will work..  It did mine. I just tried it 10 min ago. Only if I would've tried that 3-4 months ago, I could've saver myself a lot of aggravation.  Just clean the little hole with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. And presto again, a working phone.  Hope this helps, wish I had read this months ago.

P.S.  HAPPY IPHONING .  It still is the best phone ever !!!!!

In my case, i found out my leather case was the culprit.  Changing to a silicon skin seems to solve my problem.

I just went to Apple store yesterday and got a new 4S Iphone. The new phone is doing exactly the same as the old one and this is really frustrating!

Apple needs to step up to the plate and fix this fast!

Just want to add my voice to those who had the problem due to a skin that was covering the sensor. The skin actually had a little horizontal cutout that I hadn't removed because I wasn't sure what it was for. (duh to me)

I removed it and everything is fine again.

The fact that Siri stopped activating when I held my phone up to my ear should have clued me in. I had previously activated that feature but after I put the skin on it stopped working. I never made the connection until I read this thread.

I LOVE my iPhone but HATE the muting while on the phone, dialing other people while talking on the phone.  I did not have this issue from December when I got it until this past week when I upgraded my iphone.  I do not have a cover on it but did for several weeks.  No muting/calling others.  Hate to change from this iPhone to another brand.  but it is getting embartrassing to be on a business call and here "Karen-Karen you are on mute again." Arrgghhhhh!!!!

I was having this problem on my iphone 4. I kept muting everyone. Decided to read the last replies first and noticed a pattern about the protective film on the little line above the other line. I looked at my phone and thought "what little line?" Oh! The one I covered over with a pretty little shoe cover. Took the sticker off and we are good to go. Thanks guys for sharing this information! Lifesavers all of you!

I have an iPhone5 and put the  LifeProof case on it.  Now I have this problem also.  I reset all the settings like suggested here but that didn't fix the problem.

Just goes to show money can't buy happiness.  Still waiting for a fix!

More than likely it is the case. Remove the case and test the phone and see if it works then. If so, there is something about the case that is blocking the proximity sensor. My son has a Lifeproof on his iPhone 5 and it works, so if you find it is the case, contact Lifeproof and they will likely replace it.

So, while they go and fix this problem with software and youre stuck with an iPhone 4, try this. Call someone, put them on speaker and lock your phone(lock button on top). This is the only way to lock your phone without ending the call. You should hear the other person on the line while the screen is pitch black. Put in headphones (received in your package or a set you already own) While headset is inserted, keep the phone locked and remove the headset. You trick your phone and youre done. The phone is now off and you can talk for as long as you want. To end the call, open your phone as normal(Passcode/No Passcode) and exit out the conversation. Quick solution until we see results. Hope this helps.
