my external disk can't modified, i cant copy paste item on it, why; i want my file to write and read for mac and windows

my external disk can't modified, i cant copy paste item on it, why; i want my file to write and read for mac and windows. what is the right format for this;

    There are many reasons one might not be able to paste to an external drive.  Assuming it was formatted with Windows (if not let us know your exact setup):

     

    Using the standard software that comes on your Mac platform the disk should be formatted in FAT32 which can be read from and written to by both Windows and Mac. The native Mac cannot write to NTFS drives which is the other major format Windows uses.

     

    If you add a 3rd party package that can write to NTFS drives then the drive can be formatted as a NTFS drive.

     

    I'm not in the Windows world so I don't know if software exists there to read/write Mac formatted drives.
