If I understand you correctly, you have two users that use
the same iTunes library? Or, are the two users simply
sharing the media files and maintaining their own playlists,
play counts, etc.?

I'm surprised the alias method worked, and it certainly isn't the prescribed method.

Correct. 2 users with the same on the same machine using the same iTunes library.
