Any way to avoid multiple instances of Kontakt?

Hi all.  I've been trying to find a way to reduce the number of Kontakt instances in my primary gig concert and wonder if anyone has worked out how to do this.  However, I don't want to run Kontakt as an external instrument via the IAC driver....I'd like to use MainStage channel strip aliases and a Kontakt instrument bank if possible so that level meters etc in MainStage are still fully functional. If this isn't possible and you've found a different way to achieve the same thing, I'm all ears!

Using a Kontakt instrument bank and aliases seemed to be the perfect way to achieve what I wanted but for some reason, program changes aren't been received in Kontakt (from MainStage).....so I don't know if I've configured things incorrectly or it's not possible to do what I want.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Gary

Here's what I thought would be possible (but it doesn't seem to work):

  1. Have a master instance of Kontakt either at a concert or set level...even a master patch would be fine.  This master instance would contain my Kontakt instrument bank of, say, 15 different instruments
  2. My patches (say, 1-15 if I'm using 15 different Kontakt instruments) would each have a channel strip alias of the master Kontakt instance
  3. Voila, the MainStage program changes for each patch would route to the correct  instrument in the master Kontakt instance.

However, the master instance of Kontakt doesn't seem to respond to the program changes from each MainStage patch and so only the Kontakt instrument currently selected in the Kontakt instrument bank will sound.

I don't think that this method will 'fly' because MS does not pass through MIDI Program Changes: they either change Patches in MS or they do nothing.

You might do better to use Kontakt in Alias Channel Strips, with your sounds loaded and assigned to different MIDI channels in Kontakt. Using the Alias Channel Strips with 'multi-timbral' MIDI input would allow you to select a particular sound by MIDI channel on a Patch by Patch basis.

it seems that it's not a matter of changing channels on the wind controller but that MS sends the channel change through to Kontakt and I don't even have to worry about it....so that'll probably work.

    Yep :-)

It's also possible to layer sounds this way: set the multi-timbral MIDI in to the same device & channel for different 'parts'
