To delete all your old texts, did you have to do it one by one? Or is there an easier way?

OK, how do you do that. Do you mean delete texts? I tried deleting the music from my iPhone and resyncing. That got rid of about 4 gigs. However, that led to many playback problems, so I reverted back. I'm willing to try your solution.

I'm not restoring, because it will require that i update to iOS6.

If you restore it through iTunes then yes, but you can stay with iOS 5 by erasing all content and settings right from the iPhone (Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings).  First, do a backup to iCloud so that you can try re-loading your backup at the end of the process (but your backup is likely corrupt, so Other may shoot back up).

If re-loading your backup from iCloud still results in a swollen Other, repeat the on-device erase process but set it up as a new iPhone, and you'll still have iOS 5 (as well as a lot of work to get your iPhone back with all the changes you've made in the past for e-mail accounts, etc.)  But at least Other will go down to < 1 GB by starting new.

You can only delete an entire "conversation", not a single text within a conversation.  To delete a conversation just swipe across it and tap Delete.

My other was some 20-30GB. Looking at the app usage data, it seems to be pictures that don't show up as pictures in the data usage bar.

Followed Lawrence Finch process, and got my other down to 3GB. 31GB free! Wow, today I started with being unable to download Google Maps app due to space limitations...

You can delete individual messeges.   Open up a conversation and choose edit on the top right.  You can now put a checkmark on messeges you want to delete or forward.  The delete and forward buttons appear on the bottom.

So, added back all my photo library, and I'm still showing 25GB free. Wow, did that restore really clear up my memory usage! Phone works faster now, too. It was hesitating before...

I thought my music was there, the titles were there, but nothing played.  Had to reload all mly music manually.  Ugh.

I can confirm that doing the task below clears out the Other category. I dont know why people say its iMessages and voicemails and emails... I never keep iMessages, photos, anything. I had 900 MB of Other, I did what it said to do below, it its down to 200 MB

To Tigervision: I followed these instructions exactly and it worked for me. I think the key is to shut it off and turn it back on (steps 6 and 7). Please do this step by step and let us know if it works!

    1. Go to "Settings" on your iphone home screen

    2. Select "General"

    3. Select "Usage"

    4. Select "Music"

    5. SWIPE from left to right AND DELETE IT (don't let that scare you, yes, hit the red delete button)

    6. Do not Exit the Screen, Shut your Phone off!

    7. Start it back up, next time you plug it to your PC to sync, the "Other" should be Gone

If you read through this thread and the many others on the topic you will find there are many different reasons why the Other starts getting out of hand with just as many fixes. If all you had was 900MBs of Other reported I would bet you will soon see it quickly return to a similar number which in most circumstances would be considered normal. Most people here have many gigabytes of data reported as Other where I personally have had my 32GB iPhone report 23GBs of Other after a bad sync. It was my Music Library not being properly reported which only a Restore would fix.

My iPad was also reporting 5GBs of Other which I believe part was a carry over from my iPhone's normal 1.5-2GBs of reported Other since the initial setup was based on my iPhones Backup. I only set my iPad up with my iPhone's Backup as a quick way to get it set up till I had time to do a clean setup. Before doing a clean install and with 5GBs of reported Other on my iPad I tried every fix reported here as well as other reported fixes. What ever was taking up this space would not budge in this case.

Once I was done playing I Restored my iPad 3 as a new iPad copying the apps and media I preferred. My 64GB iPad holds 32GBs of music/audiobooks and normally rotates 10-15GBs of video. I also use podcast, radio apps and other media based apps with do store extra data. My iPad normally reports around 2.5GBs of Other which I consider normal. So unless your Other is reporting to be taking up many GBs of space I wouldn't waste my time freeing it up.

WOW! Thanks, the music thing totally worked for me. Took Other down from 4.15GB to 229MB !!  Amazing. Backing up, restoring and restarting phone had done nothing for me.

Yes, it reduced your Other. Unfortunately, you will discover that it has corrupted your music, that will no longer play correctly if it plays at all.

How do I restore my iphone? Should it be plugged in and connected to itunes while it's restoring?
