MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

    LoL, so it's that simple, you walk in and demand.

     

    More like you end up having to take them to court with or without the help of a lawyer. That's what life with an unethical company is like.

     

    So that $3000 rip off turns to an even more expensive problem (short term at least). That said, better that than letting Apple get away with selling you a defective product, then feed you nonsense to justify it.

     

    BTW, I feel zero pity for anyone who's come across this thread and STILL bought it. They deserve the IR. To them, I'd say it's a "feature" you knowingly purchased. To everyone else, I feel bad for you and you're examples of why we need serious consumer protection laws.

    Bought a week 43 2.6/8/512 at a US Apple retail store.  Then ordered a BTO 2.6/16/512 with the intention of returning the first one.

     

    Second machine is week 48 production, has an LG panel.  IR showed up after 7 days of steady, but not especially CPU intensive use.  I took it in for repair/replacement today (and to handle the return of the first machine). I got a little pushback initially ("we have no way of knowing what kind of panel you'll get" "they won't replace the screen more than 3 times" etc), they happen have a replacement panel in stock, so they're replacing it.

     

    Happily, the part number of the replacement panel is 661-7171, according to the work order.

     

    I know of an identical BTO 2.6/16/512 machine that came over on the same plane that has a Samsung panel.

     

    Restored backup to my first, 2.6/8/512 machine while the 2nd machine is being repaired.  It has a Samsung panel....

    Wow thanks. You just confirmed that LG panel from week 48 still show sign of IR !!

     

    You just made my decision much easier. Now totaly convinced im doing the right thing returning my week 48 rMBP with LG panel...

     

    Apple fix this. Will have to used back to non-retina screen by the time Apple get a stable product out.

    My laptop is 48 week production. Love it LG Screen, no IR. had it for over 2 weeks now. I code a lot and watch movies at the same time with an external monitor. I leave my laptop screen on with my codes in place for hours, and still haven't seen anything.

    Theres no good Lg panels that ive seen in shops around my area there all duds even if they dont show any signs at first they will sooner or later ... Apple need to ditch LG and just take supply from SAMSUNG only.

    Mines a week 48 samsung so they are obviously still throwing either screens in and the problem still exsits they havent fixed anything .... LG = DUD Fix this APPLE you are ripping ppl off with a product that doesnt deliver at all !!

    mine's a rMBP 2.6 16gb ram, 256ssd. bought it in week 36/37. (denmark, europe).

    has LG display and samsung ssd..

     

    only in the past few weeks i've noticed a IR / burn in, especially on grey screens and websites.

    other than that - the general performance is subpar what I expected from a +3500$ machine

     

    I would turn it in for repairs/replacement.. but can't due to exams the next 6 weeks.

    doubt I will ever go apple again.

    ALSO just noticed a small scratch in the screen - less than 1mm wide, a little off the center. it looks like a dust particle on light screens.. and on dark screens it glows up bright.. ******* annoying - how it ever got there is beyond me. my rMBP only travels from my briefcase to my desktop and bag, and I've only ever cleaned the screen and keyboard with the cloth that came with the stupid thing. *moan*

    I understand your pain. It is really bad to notice such quick degradation of performance on a device of this price tag.

     

    Apple silence on the issue and the time it take to correct the situation is making me walking back to buy my first Mac. I mean having this kind of problem with other manufacturer could be a lot more harder to get a solution, but usualy computer cost half the price as Apple ones...

     

    I have no problem paying premium price for a premium hardware. But no fix on LG after near 6 months is a real let down for a lot of rMPB owner... They gonna swap your LG display probably, but again to put another LG that doesn't look any better from the latest post on this thread...

    I talked to AppleCare again today.  This is the FIRST time someone admitted an issue.  They said they are waiting on the engineers to provide a fix.

    Well, my Week 41 early October LG screen finally started showing signs of IR about a week ago, then it started showing up pretty quickly and pretty badly over the past few days, often only after a couple of minutes.

     

    So, I took it in to the Apple Store (Hong Kong) today and there was no problem getting a screen repair.  The Genius said he'd heard of the problem and didn't even try a test or wait for me to finish demonstrating the problem to him, he immediately authorised a repair.  They have panels in stock, so it should just take a couple of days.

     

    I asked if the new panel would have the same problem, as I don't want to have to bring it in for a replacement every couple of months, and he said he couldn't guarantee that.  He also couldn't do anything to help me get a Samsung over an LG panel.

     

    So, I'll see what the repair yields, keeping fingers, toes and eyes crossed for a "good" Samsung screen now.

    Apple has redeemed themselves today.  I went to the Apple Store and didn't go through a Genius.  I asked for a manager the moment I walked in the door.  She agreed without hesitation that the image persistence is unacceptable and replaced my MacBook on the spot.  The new one has a SAMSUNG display too!  I didn't expect a replacement, I just wanted the screen replaced so it would work without persistence.

    Apple? lol, you mean that manager.

     

    This manager's reaction is not consistant with what others have written and what Apple themselves have said about the topic. That manager might be ethical but I've read nothing in this thread that would cause me to believe "Apple" is nearly as ethical as the manager you dealt with.

    This manager probably purchased a rMPB for himself that had an LG and discovered how much is own company screwed up on this one !

    This was after HOURS spent on the phone with AppleCare, multiple interactions with the software engineers, 8 visits to the Genius Bar... thank goodness it's a Samsung!
