I have not used Apple mail in a long time.  I tried it a little while ago, but eventually went back to Outlook for Mac.  However, I am trying it again.  I seem to remember that there was a way to only delete the most recent message in a group of messages when you are viewing them in conversation mode.  I cannot find it.  Currently, if there are two or more messages grouped together and I delete the email thread that is selected, it deletes them all.  I don't always read all of the grouped messages at the same time.  I realize I can expand the conversation and delete a single one.  However, I would prefer something less cumbersome.  Is there such a setting that I'm missing?

Select the message you want to delete.

As mentioned above, that deletes all of the messages in the conversation thread.  When 3 messages from three different days are grouped together in a conversation, Mail shows me the most recent one, which I read.  Then, if I click the trash icon, all three messages are deleted, instead of the one it first took me to.  So, again, at this time I have to expand the conversation and delete the individual one that I was reading.  Now, this is not an issue if the e-mail conversation is between people, since you usually want to read all of the replies.  However, when it's listserve e-mails (like daily Yahoo news e-mails), I don't necessarily want to read all of them from the week at one sitting.

Hopefully, this makes the issue clearer.

No, it does not delete all the messages. Select the message itself. The message pane within the conversation view should be highlighted -- outlined in blue. The selection in the message list will be gray. If the thread is highlighted in the message list, then you have selected the entire thread, so that is what you delete.

Thanks.  I would have preferred Apple Mail to intelligently not delete all of the grouped messages or at least provide a setting so the user can choose whether it deletes them all.  However, your suggestion is the best option at this time.
