I have been having the same problem and I have tried all of the suggestions

    reset pram

    clear caches

    fix permissions

sign in thru a different ios device

sign in thru an xcode simluated device

try a diffrent set of dns servers

    try a different network

    none seem to work.

There is a way to play the games - disconnect from the internet, then game center will not start, and you can at least play the game, but this method sort of defeats the whole purpose of game center.

My host file is exactly what was described

    127.0.0.1       localhost

    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

    ::1             localhost

    fe80::1%lo0     localhost

    still does not work

I am beginning to wonder if it is being blocked by the firewalls on the networks I tried it on.

If I do use another ios device or simulator I am able to accept the agreement, but when I go back to osx, no workie...

That is strange, all I can suggest is to try connecting on your home network where you at least have control over your router settings?

I should also mention for others for whom this has worked, once you have connected and signed in to the game center you can put your customised hosts file back in place and GC will continue to work.

Thanks for the suggestion - but there are no files with those names on my computer.  Others alos say they've fixed the problem by deleting various files, com.apple.(whatever), but again, there are no files by those names anywhere that I can find them.  I've been hunting for some kind of Game Center cache - but I'm stumped.

It's very frustrating.  I'm no a naif in this stuff, been tinkering and fixing my own Macs since the early 90s.  Ghost in the machines I guess.  Lost my iTune Library once for no reason and got it back by typing .itl behind "Library".  Go figure.  It never had an .itl on it before & it worked for years uneventfully.  Anyway.  I'm still hunting for my magic bullet.

This whole thing is is really stupid and sloppy on Apples part.

Ok - I'm so  confused now, I'm not even sure if I'm replying to the original thread I posted to....

I posted earlier today that i couldn't even find the files on my computer that others said to delete in order to make Game Center under ML to work.

THEN - after hunting through  my  iMac again and not finding  the files to delete that others suggested, I flipped on WELDER again - GAme Center came up - and it workef.

Who knows? Ghost in the machine?  I did nothing except run Software Update  (which clained to be putting nothing down but an HP software update).   Then I hit on ERLDER - and Game Center worked nice as pie.  I'm in.  Now all I have to do is put up a pic I like.

&eyes Apple suspiciously*   i I do not put it past you SOBs to send something into my anansi to fix a problem without having to admit there ever was a problem.  i

Well Apple, now I'm so tired and disgusted - I don't even feel like playing games anymore.  I went into WELDER and just signed off.

Can't you understand anymore the calue of ....  just doing it?

I do not know how to even find the etc/hosts folder..

    Thank you very much.

Make a backup of the original file first. do not type the ""

    Open terminal

Type "sudo cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.bak" then hit enter. You will need to supply your root password. Your backup file will be named hosts.bak and will be in the same directory as the original.

type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" then hit enter. You may need to supply your root password again.

Note what you see in that file, if its anything different from the entries I posted earlier in the thread then you are going to have to edit the file to remove the extra entries. Use the arrow keys to navigate and the delete key to remove the extra entries. Once you finish editing you need to save the file by pressing and holding ctrl and then x, release those keys, then y to confirm.

If you have any doubts about editing files in terminal, do some research first. I will not be held responsible for any errors you make

However if you do screw up the original file then you can recover the file by typing:-

"sudo cp /etc/hosts.bak /etc/hosts" then enter key. You will need to supply your root password.

I had tried all of the suggestions, none of them worked.

I even completely opened my router - nada.

What did work, was to create a new appleid (one that was an email address).

My game does not connect even after checking the host file (everything was fine) and creating a new id (still does not connect).

When I try to log in, the error message is "Could not connect to Game Center server." If I click "retry," it either freezes, or displays that servers are unavailable and to try again later. If I enter an incorect password, it also tells me that it cannot connect.

Please help. Game Center worked fine when I originally purchased the iTouch!

Thanks for the help, Slammer!  I used your method and followed this article as well, which solved the problem for me: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3970?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
