Youre misunderstanding the times as shown.   They are sonewhat mis-labeled by APPLE, but usage = usage and Standby = TOTAL time since last charge.   The numbers are not additive.

Just did a quick test of my standby battery drain

    Duration: +- 17 minutes (from 10:58 to 11:15)

    Time: 10:58

    Usage: 2 Hours, 7 Minutes

    Standby: 6 Hours

    Battery Level: 67%

    17 minutes later

    Time: 11:15

    Usage: 2 Hours, 18 Minutes (+11 minutes)

    Standby: 6 Hours, 17 Minutes (+ 17 minutes)

    Battery Level: 66%

    Summary:

Within 17 minutes, the battery dropped 1% in standby

My iPhone thought it was in use for 11 minutes, and on standby for another 17 minutes

--> a short 17 minutes of standby was interpreted by my iPhone as 28 minutes.

    WHY???
What can I do to address this problem....

After using my iPhone 5 for more than a month, I feel that there is a hardware or software fault that make the cellular antenna or hardware drain power much faster than normal when using data. Either that or Apple's estimates for web browsing time on 3G/LTE is way too high at 8 hours. I know this because if I switch off cellular data(but not the cell connection) and use wifi only the phone can easily last close to 10 hours continous browsing. There was once I switched off the auto lock and let the phone run itself down with a webpage that refreshes itself every minute(livescore.com). It lasted barely 5 hours, way off what Apple claim the phone can do. And that is with a lot of critical features turned off like iCloud and push mail.

I don't really expect the phone to last 8 hours of usage everytime, but it's should not be unreasonable to expect at least 7 to 7.5 hours factoring in standby times. After I got the iPhone 5, for the first time my phone went dead before my work shift ends. The last time that happened was with a Galaxy S3, and never before with my 2 year old iPhone 4.

I hope Apple hears the complains and find out what's the problem, if any. If the more powerful cellular hardware caused this by design, then I am very disappointed that Apple basically lied about the usage time estimates.

iPhone 5, everything turned off (except 3G), brightness to 0:

    IMG_0002.PNG

    LOL.

I had to make a full charge around 2pm because it was dead already from the morning 8am. Dead again at 8.30pm. LOL.

My 2 years old iPhone 4 still last for 2 days of standby and around 12/14 hours of my type of use.

My wife's sister iPhone 5 (she got it a month before me):

She's Chinese so she uses the phone constantly lol. A lot of games and I guess she'll be blind soon because she's like 90% brightness. No problem on hers.

Today from 9am to 1pm, 2 hours of use, down to 30%. Went to get a talk with the carrier, they need to keep the phone for 3/4 days before exchanging it... Crap.

Just received my 5th replacement phone today and STILL have the wifi issues and battery drain. This is unnacceptable! I own MANY Apple products and have always standed by Apple 100%. This is by far my worst purchase EVER.

I am looking at getting another replacement as my problems with battery life usage are also still happening even after replacing my phone.

Any other suggestions coolkenny? My friend has the exact same phone I do and a very similar setup and can go way longer than I can while using it more.

So, after getting my latest replacement as stated above, I realized that the phones are exactly the same and have the same problems. I decided to keep my original phone and just ship back the replacement they sent me.

I put the sim card back into my original phone and let the other phone sit in the box to be shipped.

I never synced anything except for my contacts. There was nothing running, never opened Safari, didnt download any apps, no mail accounts synced, etc. etc. The phone was pretty much stock.

Well, at 1am the phone was at 55%. I let it sit in the box on standby over night. At 11am this morning, the phone was at 39%.

No SIM card so cellular data isnt the issue, no connection to wifi because it won't stay connected to my router, no apps running, no mail checking.......then what happened to the battery?????

    You do the math

So basically the consensus is its the phone or the actual battery?

I'm having the same issues. With my iPhone 5, battery life is hit or miss. Some days I will have no problems getting through an entire day. Other days (like yesterday) my battery will go from 85% to 30% in just a 1.5 hour car trip doing nothing but sending texts through iMessage. With the same usage patterns, during the first month of my iPhone 4 back in 2010 I always had between 35% and 40% battery left at the end of the day when I went to charge. I understand that with the bigger screen and more powerful internals the iPhone 5 can't achieve that much, but it should be better than it is.

Guys, as i was stating a dozen pages ago (pg. 135 if memory serves me well) chargins through usb IS a big difference. Last time i charged through usb and now i am sitting at 50% with 4 hours 18 min of usage and 22hours 5 mins of standby.

The charge was done with the chinese battry doctor app running. Hope this helps!

Well i charged my phone through usb too this time, from 2% to 100% and it seems to last longer.

Also used battery doctor when charging, only difference this time is that i used a 30min trickle charge instead of 10min/off.

Charged for around 8 hours straight (usually 3-4hours), and the results improved.

first 10-12h standby 4h usage to 1% battery

    now 16h 39min, 7h 10min usage and 34% left

strange thing, i'll charge it without battery doctor again soon enough to see if there are any differences.

@speedr0ck, I'm glad you noticed a big improvement too. I think charging through USB has to do with power management, as USB delivers a "smaller" amperage than the wall charger.
