It depends entirely on the complexity of your project and your mutual tolerance for fixing things that do not translate perfectly.
If you are a student who needs to satisfy a professor or an employee who needs to satisfy a boss and these folks all use MS Word, it don't think it makes sense to handicap yourself by using something different.

It is not MsWord's fault if an application fails to accurately create .doc files. Especially when there are applications like LibreOffice, NeoOffice, OpenOffice, Bean and even TextEdit that do a better job of it.
Pages does not do R to L text competently, but then Word for Mac doesn't do it at all.
The most compatible application with MsWord for Windows is MsWord for Windows, no exceptions.
