Q: App store downloads

A year ago I purchased an air that was a few weeks old and immediately registered it with apple.

Last week I downloaded and installed mt lion from the app store using my itunes’ account and when i then attempted to download updates for iphoto, garageband , etceteras I was asked  to log in with the original buyers’ itunes’ account, which of course i cannot do.

Apple support advised me to download updates direct from their apple site which i did to only see an error message that updates for this computer must be downloaded from the app store. So, i am left with a computer that cannot have apps updated, which of course is ludicrous.

Perhaps a simple solution is to disassociate the original itunes' account from this device and thus allow my itunes' account to have its legitimate access and download privileges, though I receive no response from apple when suggesting that solution. In the event apple cannot come up with a solution it may mean that all buyers of pre-owned mac devices that must use app store for updates and have been previously linked to a an existing itunes' account will be unable to download upgrades, and that has serious legal and PR ramifications.

Anyone have a solution suggestion?

Thank u

It's "Show hidden purchases". If it doesn't show, contact with Mac App Store support > http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact

Have sent several emails to apple support and they seem to just be going around in circles and not addressing the real issue.

Thank you again and have a safe and happy festive season.

You purchased  this machine used? I believe the license for such apps (if originally purchased from the app store) is not transferable - see this excerpt of the SLA for Garageband:

    3. Transfer.

    A. Apple Software obtained from the Mac App Store is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so.

    B. For any preinstalled Apple Software, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that: the Apple Software is transferred together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; (iv) you have not associated the Apple Software with your Mac App Store account as set forth in Section 2B; and (v) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License.

If the seller got it preinstalled, he could have transferred it to you under certain circumstances. However, basically, licenses for any application (or OS) you purchase at the app store are not transferable - they are forever tied to the Apple ID they were purchased with.

If that is the case it may mean that any apple device not purchased new is effectively obsolete when sold on since its apps cannot be updated.

    Surely that is not possible.

It's correct. You purchase applications with your Apple ID, and you can install them only on devices with your Apple ID. Apple offers you to install iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand when you purchase a Mac, but they're registered to the Apple ID of the owner, so if you didn't buy a new Mac, you can't install them

Of course you can upgrade or update a used Mac (but you need to pay again). My take on it is that the software is being sold rather inexpensively = you don't really buy it, you are "renting" it. If you sell a machine, you are required to remove any updates/upgrades purchased from the app store - including, for instance, Mountain Lion - and reinstall the original OS. Mac OS used to retail for at least $129 - it is now less than $20.

As the buyer of a used machine, you will need to pay again to upgrade the OS or purchase apps. Again, the price is reasonable. As an example, I purchased Aperture 2 and the Aperture 3 upgrade via retail install disks - cost me more than $250 (don't remember exactly); it is now being sold at the app store for $79.99. I can sell my disks as long as I do not retain a copy; or I can use them on my Mac and Software Update updates them for me. I paid a premium for that privilege and I will continue to do so - I have not purchased anything at the app store (except the OS since I have no other choice for that) and do not plan on purchasing any apps.

Yes, I have paid for and upgraded to mtn lion - that is when the problem became evident.

A reinstall from a mtn lion boot disc/usb will probably fix the issue though am reluctant to do an erase and install.

    Thank u

Since any app store purchases are not only "registered" to a machine ID, but also the Apple ID used to purchase them, the problems cropping up now are exactly that sellers did not wipe their machines and buyers are unable to update because the app store cannot associate the new Apple ID with the one used to purchase it. My humble opinion: sellers really need to read the legalese because they are exposing buyers to having to obtain the previous OS/install disks, and jump through hoops in order to be able to get updates. I decided long ago (when Lion was released and the SLA was published) that I would not buy a used machine unless the seller complied with the SLA.

Looking at it from a different perspective though: it is an absolutely brilliant marketing strategy......

Far too predatory for my liking - hopefully the sad loss of SJ has not completely eradicated apple's heart and soul.

Obviously, I don't care for it since I've decided to avoid making purchases there; I will continue to either download an application from the developer or purchase a retail disk. If it's only available from the app store, I won't buy it and will make do without it.
