Q: External DVD on iMac G3

I have one of the last iMac G3s--either the 600MHz model. I've upgraded the hard drive to a 7200 rpm 120GB one and it's currently got 640mb of RAM. (I haven't upgraded that to the 1GB yet.) I finally found a wifi USB adapter that would work with the USB ports. Oh, and it's running 10.4.11.

Anyway, I'd like to hook up an external CD/DVD drive, if possible. But I'm wondering if it's possible or would even be worth it with these specs.

If so, could I use a USB drive, came not FireWire? (I found a used drive that the owner said worked with his 2003 Windows desktop.)

Thanks for any advice!

I would stick to using Firewire optical drives if possible. You may be able to hook up to a USB port, but those ports are most likely USB 1.0 and would be too slow to use with an optical drive.

why do you want a dvd drive? i had a slightly older g3 imac once that came with a dvd drive and even at the the time i thought it was cool the quality wasn't that great. i also now have a g3 600 and it has crossed my mind from time to time to get a dvd drive but i really have never pulled the trigger on it because i can't come up with a pressing need to get one. by the way, i'm on mine 3 or 4 times a week, mostly in os9 for old time's sake. for some odd reason my music sounds better in os9 on itunes than it does in osx but it's probably just the settings i have it on.

No specific reason, I guess. I probably wouldn't really watch much on it, now that I think about it. I just saw a few used drives on Craigslist and if it'd work and wasn't expensive, I thought I'd go for it.

I mainly use mine for internet things and such, since I'm really not a fan of laptops anymore and not having anywhere to put it comfortably.

    Thanks for the input!
