Please do confirm with Apple Care. But there have been several threads on this, so I'm sure.

If you compare the camera preview (the screen as you snap a photo) on the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 4S or even the iPad, you'll see a difference:

    - The area where the camera "snap photo" button on the iPhone 4S and iPad is transparent - you can see your photo subject through the button.

    - The area where the camera "snap photo" button on the iPhone 5 is opaque - it is blacked-out - hence displaying the photo preview area at a 4:3 aspect ratio, matching the photo sensor.

Therefore, the preview that you are seeing in the camera is what you get in the final photo.  If you want to use the photo for a 16:9 "full-screen effect", I guess you need to compensate by backing up or zooming out to get more of the subject "longways", knowing that you will lose some of the previewed "shortways" subject.

Hope that makes sense - I wasn't sure of the correct terminology in the last paragraph.  ;-)

You can take 16:9 photos while shooting Video.  In the Video Camera mode.  Still I agree this should have been addressed in the Camera function.

    Hi!

There is a pretty good photo app that takes photos in 16:9 ratio default on the iPhone 5. It is Blux Camera. I think it's sad that apple didn't give this choice built in the camera app, but with this app you can decide which format you want to use.

And in addittion  to the conversation, there are cameras out, they support 16:9 ratio in default mode. My Pentax wg-2 is like that.

Now they have ad which shows full size photo.  This is misguiding for the users.

Why would you like to use only part of your picture sensor all the time?

You can crop the picture easily in Photos App... or just pinch to zoom... BTW, iPhone photos, 5MPix or 8MPix, are much bigger than iPhone screens, which are way under 1MPix. iPhone photos are many, MANY times the full screen! (Standard 16:9 TV and PC monitor is 1920x1080 = 2,073 MPix, Apple displays are higher resolution.)

There are certain standards for photo sizes, 3:2 (35mm film and digital), 4:3 (consumer and mobilephone cameras), 1:1, ... whereas video standards are often 16:9 and old tv/video 4:3.

Movie theatres are showing 2,40:1 format, so perhaps this would be the best for the next iPhone screen size then ;-)

The question here is; how do you want to use your iPhone? Only for photo, or for video, or perhaps for internet... or to make phonecalls and send messages... Apple has a good compromise in screen size for most users.

Do you want to take wide-angle photos only? Someone else wants portraits of 4:3 or 1:1 format. Should there be specific iPhone model for each of us who are not able to crop their photos afterwards?

Well, a preset of picture format could be done easily, so stay tuned.

Odd shapped sensor or not. The camera shoots in 1080p, which is pleanty good rez, for a video or a photo. So, I am sure that there are some third party apps out there somewhere that will automatically crop for 1080 so you can have a full screen shot. And if you are really that picky, you can walk sideways slowly with panarama instead of turn and crop from that enormus rez. If you cant custom wallpapers of pictures you took yourself with the phone, there are ways to do it.

To capture full screen photos you will need to launch the camera app and switch to video mode. Start recording the video and then press the capture button during the video. If you're not aware of it , Apple allows you to capture pictures while recording a video on the iPhone 5. So since the video is in full screen, (tap the camera icon to take a widescreen shot or fullscreen picture)

hope this will help u sir..good day...

Surprisingly when a friend of mine sent me a picture from s2, it shows in the full screen. But that is the only rare picture which shows in the full screen. Other clicks from that phone are the same smaller size. Weird!

The iPhone5 camera sensor is designed for photography.  16:9 is a movie standard but not a photography standard.  I believe that the standard photo is 4:3.  I wish Apple would change it to 3:2 just like on DSLRs.  If you want to print your images, you can just send them to Costco and they will create 4:3 prints for you.  The photo app I use saves in 645 format.  That produces very nice 4x5 and 8x10 images.  The images are saved as TIFF (23MB) format and the image size is 3264x2448 (8Mp).
