??? It looks like you are running 10.6.5 . . . would there be any difference between 6.5 and the fact that I'm running 10.6.8? Also didn't do the 10.6.8 supplemental update, as it wasn't part of a Combo update as the general wisdom here on the list suggested?? Any reason to do the supplemental update? All this in terms of getting AJ to be able to run . . . needed or not . . . .

Well, it could be a big diff, but due to a multitude of problems I can't boot 10.6.8, but I do believe I ran AJ in 10.6.8 a few times without problems.
Much of my computer equipment was stolen a few months ago, other equipment is dying left & right.

AH, well I understand about the "equipment dying . . ." . . . it does seem to happen eventually . . . . Sorry about the theft, it's too bad some people feel it's OK to take stuff . . . perhaps all because of the hard times. Well, anyway, so far no reply on the Source Forge Bug tracker site, although it looks like it moved up in the list, no discussion there that might give some hints have been offered. I did try to follow your recent suggestion, but, it was as I originally said . . . it isn't recognized in single user . . . so far only "exit" has been successfully executed in single user . . . .
Might not have internet access tomorrow, but maybe Sat the phone company will get the phone working again . . . possibly due to rain . . . in LA . . . ???? Hilarious to have no 'net for 11 days . . . .

As posted elsewhere, with the help of some gents on another forum the answer to the applejack in 10.6.8 was provided . . . in rEFIt window, highlight the OSX box, then press "F2" key that goes to a menu where, "run OSX as single user" is selected . . . I could then run applejack in 10.6.8 . . . .

Thanks to you for your help, I'm just glad that the issue was just a matter of knowing how to use rEFIt, and for right now there doesn't have to be a lot of technical messing around to fix the problem . . . . It's just about having the right information . . . .

Interesting - I was expected your Tiger but not Snow Leopard issues to be duel boot related. I don't recall your saying that the Snow Leopard Mac was duel boot. I found this part of an old post on another forum:
To boot into single user mode with rEFIt:
At the rEFIt main menu:
Highlight the OSX boot partition (the big blue apple)
Boot options will appear:
Select 'Boot Mac OS X in single user mode' and press enter.

Yes, it is interesting . . . simple solution; that post looks like the same one that was posted yesterday on a non-Apple forum site thread of mine . . . from '08 or '09 . . . ??? But, indeed, all of my 3 assundry computers are carved for dual boot . . . might not have been mentioned on this thread . . . might have been, pretty sure it was mentioned or asked about on the specific "applejack" thread . . . . Anyway, thanks for your insights . . . moving on to the next yet to be undiscovered issue . . . . It's out there . . . .
