There is no way of doing that other than modifying system files. There are tools out there that will do that (some may even give you a black Dock), but beware of using them, as they can damage the system. Especially if you try using them on a system version they were not designed for. People have borked their systems, requiring a reinstall, by doing that sort of thing.

Sorry, I can't. I have no interest whatsoever in possibly damaging or destabilizing my system in order to make minor changes to its appearance, so I'm not familiar with any of them beyond Candybar.

    Try Dock Mod: http://spyresoft.com

It's $8.00 and allows for complete customization of the Dock appearance. Just updated for 10.8.4

Beware, though, if you try DockMod. It's a hack and can cause system problems, as the developers themselves warn:

DockMod injects itself into the dock process and modifies the actual code in the program. Since the dock application is an integral part of your system, there is always the risk that unforeseen bugs in DockMod can cause the dock process to crash, therefore causing extreme system instability.

Make sure you have good backups, preferably a full clone, prior to installing DockMode just in case it does indeed cause problems.

    Regards.

DockMod works like a charm, hasn't caused any noticeable crashes or problems yet.

Except that the shadow disappeared in 1.1 / I can't find where to turn it on.

In other words - now it hardly makes the dock any better
