Hi, I have a 15" Macbook Pro 5.1 running Leopard 10.5.8.

It's been working pretty much fine until recently when it just wouldn't turn on at all. I tried an SMC reset by taking out the battery and adaptor, holding power for 5 seconds, replacing battery and adaptor and turning on but still no response. However, I can get it to turn on by removing battery and adaptor, holding down the power button and replacing the battery and adaptor still holding the button down, then letting go and pressing it again for some reason.

Unfortunately this hasn't fully fixed my mac, it works but the fans continuously run full speed from power up, it doesn't respond to the lid being closed, it doesn't respond to light so the screen stays fully on and the keyboard doesn't light up, all typical signs of an SMC reset needed. However if I turn it off I'm back in the same position as before..

Is there any way to fix these problems without SMC reset or is the way to reset it different on this model? An apple store isn't really possible because I'm abroad at the moment and there isn't one near by, plus they'd find a way to charge me loads anyway because its waaaay past warranty.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you've done the smc right, although the second part is quite strange amd not normal.  You can try a pram reset (though it might not do anything, but won't hurt either)  Power off, hold the option, command,P,R (no cmmas) and poer up, hold thee keys brfore the start chime, continur to hold these keys till you hear the chime 2 time. Reboot.  You can also try a safe boot sometimes this fixes stuff. Power up holding the shift key and continue to hold till you see the progress bar then release and let it finish booting.  Shut down then try booting normally. When you have accesss to an Apple store I would bring it in, they diagnose for free then tell what a repair costs, usually a flat fee if there is no liquid damage. About 1/3rd the price of replcing and they repair what needs to be fixed.  Hope this helps and holds you overr.  All the Best

Hi sanjampet thank you for your reply! I tried both of your suggestions unfortunately its still in the same position as before... Is there any way to reset the smc from the terminal or without the startup procedure?

You may have already tried the suggestions mentioned in Apple's articles - Mac OS X 10.5: Troubleshooting installation, startup, and login issues

Again nothing seems to work.. I appreciate the help, any more ideas? Whats weird is the power button works fine until i take the battery and adaptor out and hold the button down for 5 seconds.. Is there any way to power on after ive done the first part of the reset without using the power button? Ive read about jumping but couldnt find anything specific to my model.. Thanks!

Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  You can get free diagnostics at an Apple store (unknown about AASPs).  This way, you will know exactly what is wrong.  You will have to pay for the repairs if you do not have Apple Care.

I have a feeling it might have to come to that! Although i just remembered before it happened i didnt shut down the computer properly it ran out of charge, is there anything that could mess up and ways of fixing it?

You can't know how to repair something if you do not know what is wrong with it.  Take it in for your free diagnostic test.  After you find out go to the Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair, YouTube's 'How To' video tutorials and FixYa websites for DIY instructions.

Great news I have it working again! After doing the reset by taking the battery and adaptor out, holding the button for a while (i did a lot longer than 5 seconds, close to 20 because in other threads that's what people did) and replacing the battery and adaptor i left it for about half an hour before pressing the power button and its completely fixed. I don't know why it worked but it did.. I appreciate the responses though, and I completely understand what you mean about needing the diagnosis before repair. Somehow just fiddling around worked this time though..
