Q: iTunes 11 airplay stops in middle of songs, why?

We have iTunes 11 on a MacBook Air with Lion (10.7.5, all current updates). Occasionally, in the middle of a song playing over Airplay, iTunes stops streaming the song. As best we can tell it appears to be random. If we go back to a song that it previously stopped on, but it doesn't stop again. Thought it may be Energy Savings settings, but it's set for 3 hours before sleeping, and 2 hours to turn off screen. Now "Put the had disk to sleep..." is set, and perhaps this is it. But according to my wife, this never happened under iTunes 10.x, it has just started with iTunes 11.

I'll try the "hard disk sleep" setting and report back, but any other ideas?

Wow! That seems pretty complicated... I do have a TM backup, though. I tried to just restore itunes to 10.7 and it wouldn't read the library; the additional steps are necessary to get everything coordinated, I guess. I am going to give them another week or so and see if they issue a bug fix.  I saw somewhere that they are fixing the duplicate song problem, so maybe this issue will be corrected too. Hope so. Thanks for the link, dutchmike.

Update 11.0.1 seems to have fixed the problem. I have been streaming itunes from my ATV for two straight days with no pauses. Welcome back, Apple.

I thought this was true as well when 11.01 was released 24 hours ago but yet again, I sent feedback to apple this unresolved issue.  Solid green light on Airport Express and within 45 minutes, poof, no sound nor able to click on the green button as it is 'shaded'.

My comment to apple feedback ... disappointed that this new and improved iTunes version wasn't fully tested and shoven out the door.  The newest version to eliminate our mutual problems appear to have been half baked.

Actually this was an issue with me in iTunes 10!  I was hoping 11 would fix the problem, but not yet.  I have 11.0.1 and still no fix.  This is SO frustrating!!!

after many attempts, the solution is rather simple, one in which I had overlooked until yesterday.  Download the software update that was available in June 2012 to better prepare for multiple sound systems running future iTunes versions.  Since updating this software update, iTunes has been running "multiple" Airplay for over 21 hours trouble free.

Running 11.0.1 with the Airplay set to Multiple has also fixed the problem for me.

I get some random skips or pauses when I tell the iPad 1 or 3 via Remote that iTunes 11.0.1 on the mac mini c2d should airplay stream via gigabit to dir655 router and wifi to an airport express. Yesterday it seemed somewhat repetitive where it would happen every 45 min or so, this morning it happened after 10 minutes, then again an hour later.

All while there is zero other network activity nor anything that would upset the wifi network.

Completely up to date mobile & iTunes.

Not sure where to put the blame or find an answer.

    Two things of note:

    - it didn't happen under iTunes 10.x

    - nor does it happen when I AirPlay a radio station directly from the iPad itself

Still broken here.  11.0.1 did nothing to solve my Airplay issues.

I have had similar issues, latest updates for Mountain Lion and 11.01 iTunes. I have my library on my synology nas and works fine, lately when using airplay to apple tv2, when I pause or a skype call comes in, it does pause iTunes. When I click resume it plays for around 14 seconds and then keeps pausing, click play and keeps doing it over and over until I fully quit iTunes and reload. Since selecing multiple speakers this has fixed it but its really annoying!!!

    Same, or similar problem here.

itunes stops after a time when using with airplay (at least I think this is the case as when I am at the computer it does not seem to happen).

I thought it might be a sleep setting, but have tried everything I can think of. Screen saver set to never, Computer sleep never, Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" (although I have ssd so not sure what this does).

I am using file vault, so I am wondering if this has some issue, although I have set this to require a password 1 hour after sleep begins. As I have set the computer never to sleep I cannot see why this should matter.

I thin I am out of options to try setings wise. Very frustrating and useless for using airplay with remote.

I am having the same problem:

"Airplay is unusable in iTunes 11.  It has nothing to do with disk or mac sleeping. And I have all updates done to all the systems.  As soon as I put it on multiple speakers and play to an airport express connected speaker, I get maybe 2 songs to play and then audio cuts out on both airplay, Apple TV and my MacBook Pro .  The songs are playing, just no audio.  If I make an adjustment to the airplay setting (like click single, or jugle the audio volume), audio starts again."

    Please advise how to fix.

I switched my Aiport Express to "particpate in netwrk" intead of "extend network" and it stopped droping airplay. The air express is particpating in my airport exteme wifi signal.

I had to really spend some time messing around with wifi channles my network was using, and how i set up my network to get rid of the very old and long existing problem of airplay dropping out.  Another problem with airplay i have forwarded to apple,  certainly never to be fixed, is that if you ff or rw within a song playing over airplay several times, or just once, airplay stops.  I have to turm airplay off then on to get anything to sync again..  11 has soooooooo many bugs.

While this problem is broad based since the iTunes change to 11.0 and 11.1, I have noticed an improvement with less dropping out.  There may have been a radio frequency change as music cuts out during AirPlay when small Cessna-like aircraft flies overhead.
