Q: Very slow internet connection on MBP mid 2010

Hello there,

I've got a MBP mid 2010 running ML 10.8.2. Model n° A1286.

Since a few weeks my internet connection with my wireless router AND with the ethernet port has become extremely slow.

The Wi-Fi does work, the ethernet as well, since we've got more computer here at home and there are no problems at all with those devices... So the problem is probably my mac.

Now I don't have any clue about this. It's too rare that both my Wi-Fi network card and my ethernet card are broken.

So I thought maybe there's something in the system preferences that's gone wrong.

Thanks in advance...

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Like I said, it only affects my device, the other computers and devices, like my phone and iPod, have good connection.

And by connection I meant, and I should have said that previously, that I'm not able to surf on the internet, on any browser I have (Chrome is the main one, but even not on Safari and Firefox).

Downloading via torrents and incoming mail isn't a problem. For example, I can download via torrent with a rate of 1,5Mb/s without any problem.

Did you try all the suggestions pertaining to your issues that were mentioned in the article Sig linked?

Have you checked with your isp to make sure the problem is not on their end?

Solution may be found if you search in the "More Like This" section over in the right column.

Yes I did. But before this problem occured, everything worked just fine with the same set-up...

So I'm looking for some other reason, because I know that everything worked like it should do earlier...

    No idea?

It really only occurs when I'm trying to browse the internet...

I got a 54Mbit/s speed for wifi and 100Mbit/s for ethernet, so my MBP does receive a connection, but I'm not able to use that properly for browsing...

    To give you an example.

When I'm browsing, I constantly have to swith my wifi on and off the load the pages.

And putting ethernet in and out to get the same result as above...

I know it sound strange, but I'm just telling this to help with finding a solution.

First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.

Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.

Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.

    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network

    Unlock the padlock

    Locations:  Automatic

    Highlight Airport

    Click the Assist Me button

In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.

System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.

Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

    No internet connection (wireless)

Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).

Delete all extra entries that you find.

Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

If using one of Apple's Airport routers, read its user manual or post in its forum area. If using a 3rd party router, read its user manual, contact their tech support department/website or post in its forum area.

Search Apple's Knowledge Base for possible solutions that pertains to your os.

Apparently I only had to do the first steps, by deleting all the previous networks, which I don't use anymore, and especially by restarting my system (I think it should have been longer than a month since I've shut it down), everything just works like it did before.

I think I may restart my device a bit more

But I'm curious, why does that affect the internet connection?

    Anyway, thanks a lot

I have no clue.  Apparently, like humans, Macs need a refresher to jump start & set things right.
