So I think I may be back to square one on my iPhone 5. I'll be heading to the Verizon store this weekend. About 3 people said they couldn't hear me today and I was cutting in and out. Oh well.

On to replacement iPhone 5 #1 or back to the iPhone 4 or Droid for me...

I never had that problem with the 4... Just slower Internet and crashing when the memory was filled up.

I love the new GPS features of the iPhone 5 and Siris and other features, but should if not also still be a phone??

Yesterday, while I was driving, during a business call, a customer tried to tell me a phone number, number by number... I was unable to get the number, all I heard was ..th and "nn" was that seven or nine? again, my customer "n," annnoooyying! useless... First, I told my customer to hang up and I would call back.... the same...

I write more emails now as I I don't want to be on the phone anymore, the audio quality is so bad... I already swapped the phone once for a new one and it is still the same. I never had this problem with my iPhone 4. I don't know what to do... I think I need to go back to my iPhone 4. First I need to change the case, the plug for the headset is damaged and the headset does not work any longer.

The problem seem to be widespread, my girlfriend just got her iPhone 5 and she complains about the same thing. IPone to iPhone I think it is even worse.... APPLE HELP! Do something, do it soon....

I have the exact same problem in the United States. Returning and exchanging iphone5 did not make a difference. Verizon is saying they have never heard of the issue. It's sad that all these real user stories are dismissed as 'the internet'. I used an AT&T sim card on Verizon Iphone5 and it did not have the problem (with minimal testing). I am guessing it has to do with CDMA+iphone5. It seems like this problem is in the Netherlands as well. My phone is pretty much useless in a conference call. It does everything great except voice call. I learned that nobody reads these columns, so please call the support number to report the problem. No one takes these discussion boards seriously.

    Same here...

iPhone 5 on Verizon with case.

I have a hard time understanding calls and have had some complaints about my voice quality as well from the other end. Similar problems as to those stated in this thread; choppy, robotic, drop outs, muffly.

Some have said that turning LTE off has improved the call quality. I will test this tomorrow and update with results.

This is unacceptable Apple/Verizon. There is no way these hundreds of iPhone 5 users are having random issues. Acknowledge and fix your problem. Can't believe I may have to go back to a Galaxy here in a second...

@dysphonix, Verizon denied ever hearing this issue, and they swore that I was the first. There are no notes in their internal tracking system that anyone has ever heard of this issue. I tried to show them these discussion board. They believe these user posts are not legitimate complaints. Please go to a store or call them and log a formal complaint. I am definitely surprised that I am allegedly the first person that reported this problem to them.

I put it on Verizon and Best Buy... Maybe that's why Best Buy is offering $50 off... Slower sales since the iPhone 5 is really an iPod in sheep's clothing.

    Iphone 5 black 16 GB

I bought it about 25-30 days back.
the moment I bought it,10 minutes after that I got the first call drop ( I thought the person on the other side might have had network issues)

I then face call drops for more 2 times that night,a little woried about the problem,I thought i'd make more calls next morning and get to know the problem. The result was : 20-30 call drops in few hours. You know there is a problem when the call drops and it shows "Call Back" and "Cancel" when you touch Call Back,it wont do it !
for next 5-6 times it will keep on getting cancelled, then probably the 7th time you will be able to call back the person you were talking to ! this is a serious problem.

I gave it to the service centre, the software reset my phone and gave it back to me,however the problem stopped for few days, then returned again.
Now while talking I discovered a new problem !
The Choppy/Distorted/Robotic/Edgy voice quality of the person on the other side of the phone.
My voice is clear to that person but when he/she talks, its too bad .

Also,I noticed a very imporant thing.
** When someone is talking to me over the phone, and I am not saying anything or there is no wind around me that goes into the microphone of the iphone5, then I the voice of the person is CRISP CLEAR, BUT AS SOON AS I SPEAK,1 SECOND AFTER THAT THE VOICE OF THE OPPOSITE PERRSON CHOPS !
I TRIED AND TESTED THIS MULTIPLE TIMES AND ITS TRUE !

    HENCE

    1) EVERYTIME I SPEAK,THE OPPOSITE PERSON VOICE CHOPS/BREAKS FOR A SECOND.

    2) IF IM IN THE CAR WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN AND THE WIND STRAIGHT GOING IN THE MICROPHONE,THE VOICE KEEPS BREAKING/CHOPPING.DISTORTING.

I WILL BE GOING TO THE APPLE STORE HERE IN MUMBAI,I JUST HOPE THEY DONT DO A SOFTWARE THING AGAIN AS IM SURE ITS NOT A SOFTWARE THING,EVEN A KID WOULD KNOW THAT !

PLEASE APPLE PAY SOME ATTENTION,YOU GUYS DO SUCH A GREAT JOB,A PROBLEM LIKE THIS SHOULDNT CREATE A PROBLEM MAN !

    HOPE THAT HELPS

    thanks !

    x2 iPhone 5

    Unlocked from Apple Store Ireland

    Operator: Three Ireland

Bought my iPhone 5 at the beginning of December off Apple Store Ireland unlocked. Yes it's a great piece of kit with a very premium feel to it, however after quitting tweeting, whatsapping and facebooking I've started to experience poor call quality on both incoming and outgoing calls. I just couldn't get over robotic, muffled and digitized sound coming from a 679 Euro gagdet, however callers and recipients seemed to be able to hear my voice very clearly. I didn't even try to look up the issue on the internet and called Apple Care straight away. With no hassle they offered to replace the phone. After waiting 3 days for the replacement to arrive, I've enthusiastically unpacked my brand new iPhone and regrettingly discovered that replacing the gadget didn't solve the issue as I was still experiencing same poor call quality on both incoming and outgoing calls. I once again called Apple Care and again and tried to resolve the issue over the phone with an Apple technician who seemed not able to track the issue (or completely ignored it) despite my desperate attempts to refer him to this discussion topic and once again offered me a replacement at which moment I decided to go with a full refund until there would be an official update on the issue. Again, no hassle refund followed up by several canned responses to make me feel better. Once my refund was processed, I've reached out to Apple representative I spoke to before as she provided me with her direct email in case I have any further questions. For everyone's consideration please find the please find our email correspondence below.

    Hello Justyna,

Thank you for your kind support earlier last week.

My refund has now been processed, however please let me once again raise a concern regarding iPhone 5 bad voice quality publicly discussed at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4348915?start=0&tstart=0. I am deeply disappointed I was forced to proceed with a refund due to Apple inability to track the issue and provide me an appropriate solution or replacement. I would greatly appreciate if you could share your thoughts as an Apple representative regarding this widely discussed issue.

Thank you for taking your time to read this email. I am looking forward to your reply.

Wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    Kind regards,

I would kindly recommended everyone to refrain from buying an iPhone 5 until there would be an official update on the issue.

UPDATE: Problem solved by switching to AT&T

After 2 Verizon phones, I decided to switch back to AT&T and have not encountered the problem since. AT&T told me that verizon's phone network is older and poorer quality (no shock ATT would say that about a rival), however, I have a new iPhone 5 and I'm experiencing the same call quality I had while I was on my old iPhone 4. Some folks have experienced the same problem on AT&T, but Verizon folks, I encourage you to give AT&T a try to see if it solves your problem. Unfortunately, I dont think the coverage is as good as Verizon, but call quality is my #1 priority with a phone. Good Luck!!!

Lots of people on AT&T are having this problem with the iPhone 5 as well. Glad yours works but I don't believe it's the network, and AT&T is not more advanced than Verizon. I dumped AT&T because they were awful. A nightmare.

I doubt this is the network (Verizon or AT&T). I tested calls using a call over wifi app and still having the same digitized, robotic voice issue. This is most likely a software issue with the iphone. Apple, you better acknowledge this problem stat.
