I am having a issue with Lion and my network printer!

I was using a HP 2410 as a network printer on a Mac Pro 5,1 under Snow Leopard then just updated to Lion.

Now I am not able to print from a Asus laptop thru wifi to this printer. But another computer a G4 QuickSilver has no problem!

There was a delay when using the laptop before it printed.

I checked the System Preferences for the printer and find a password that I do not know why it's so long!

I deleted the password and put in my Admin one and closed it. Now when I reopen it  there is a long string of dots there!

Before someone mentions the dots are the encripted password, I know that !

But why the long display?  Is it repeating it twice ?   If so why ?

Some utilities obscure the password with an arbitrarily long string of dots so as to not reveal even its length. This is normal.

If for some reason your Asus can no longer find the printer, remove and reinstall the print queue using whatever Windows utility does that.

Thank you for you help and info on this issue

I have tried several times to delete and reinstall the HP psc 2400 series drivers and any other files that may be with it.

But I kept getting unable to access \\ computer, where the printer is usb'd to. Even unplugged it 2 times today!

Tried to reason it out, the printer preferences on the Mac say access from the network can be  found at

    computer.local..

But it never shows this full name when I address it from the laptop, ony the \\computer name.

I have used many of the setting for internet access or line damon and HP jet something.. Nothing.

As I mentioned it worked fine before going to Lion ! I changed nothing until it would not print a few times from the laptop..

One other thing I forgot to mention is the computers it works with are Ethernet connected to a router, not using WiFi..

On the Mac the printer is connected to, make sure Printer Sharing is selected in System Preferences > Sharing, and make sure box for the HP is checked. That's all there is to do on the Mac, and if your Quicksilver is printing then everything on that end is configured correctly.

On the Asus, try downloading and installing Bonjour Print Services for Windows.

It should not matter whether the Asus is using wired Ethernet or wireless.

All you mentioned is set as it should be. Nothing for the Apples was changed except to try to connect the laptop.

If I click on the Edit button under Computer name, the next window has a checked box called Use dynamic global name. Where the user, and password shoes up.

Then under that is the Advertise services in this domain using Bonjour.

I don't know what this service does?    Never used Bonjour before!

    Bonjour Print Services for Windows.

I'll go check it out and install on my Winniedoz 7 for laptop.

I've used apple computers sine the IIe, sometime it's a pain working somethings out but as I have learned Windows has made my hair thinner ! hehehehe    at times!

    You're welcome.

Amazing things happen when you use Bonjour Print Services for Windows. Try it.

If you have an Apple AirPort Base Station (Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule) you could connect the HP printer to its USB port. That, plus Bonjour Print Services should result in a printer you can use from any of your networked computers.

Somethings I just stayed away from, actually do not really trust the technology when it first comes out!

WiFi was out many years before I took the plunge.. I use a netgear 3400 router with dual WiFi for all and many types of protective software on the laptop. Just incase!

Apple computers just felt a certain way to me when they were acting the wrong way or about to!

But nowadays with all we use and blend together, there's trouble afoot.. It takes longer to find the fix then to do it!

Using Windows has a certain feel to me also. I shall not describe it on this site.

The protective software could very well be the problem in this case. Windows requires so much of it that it prevents their reasonable use as the tools they're supposed to be.

Your Netgear router introduces another unknown. It has to support Bonjour (it should) but after trying a cheap Linksys router I finally bought the AirPort Extreme. Oddly enough it was the Windows computers that were unreliable with the Linksys - the Macs ran fine.

My Windows PCs work well with the Extreme, as long as I use Bonjour Print Services. I gave up on trying to make them print to shared or networked printers any other way.

I have had the Netgear router for 2 years, before that a older Netgear router which I setup for a friend. I got the new one because of the dual channel output also because of the first one's performace and record of little or no problems.

I agree if it takes too much time then I try something else, there's stil the compatibility issue if you can call it that (insert trash compactor here)!

Sometimes I just think they do that for the return they get for tech support or replacements due to what ever.

I don't like the idea of having a open network no matter who slim, mostly us older individuals in this here park. But still the surrounding area contains those pesky little snap shots of people..

No system what ever the setup can still be opened as we know, strange Gov programms have shown us that!!

Love Road Runner !! Fast speed over charged!  500 channels and it's all the same stuff, even in another language.

Bssssssss Click ! ! What was that !!   hehehe   running fast.........
