Q: Connecting macbook pro to TV with HDMI cable

I'm not having any luck connecting my Mac Pro to my LG TV using Kanex HDMI Cable-  Am I missing any other steps besides just connecting to the TV?

There are literally hundreds of discussions here about how to connect your MacBook Pro to any HDTV that has an HDMI input.  You should have searched those, which is easy here, and I am certain you would find your answer.

Moreover, you give no information on which OSX and which MacBook Pro you're using, what you've tried to do, or what have been the results.  I have no clue even if you have gotten the right adapters.  Give us more information.  The brand/type/color of your HDMI cable is irrelevant, as long as it works.

What are you getting on the screen of the TV?  Are you getting a completely blank screen?  Are you getting a message saying something like 'no input detected'?  Or are you seeing the spiral galaxy desktop background?

OrangeMarlin has a valid point, you have not supplied enough information for us to help you diagnose your problem.  Which MacBook Pro are you using (e.g. 13 inch, early 2011), and which version of OS X are you using? The specific model of your LG TV will help as well.

if it is being recognised, but get the galaxy background. go into settings > displays > adjustments and check the 'mirror imaging' box. problem solved.

    problem solved.

Not quite so simple as this will mean OP only gets a resolution on the TV that is the same as the built-in screen on the MBP.  It would be better to keep mirroring turned off and use the extended desktop, but if OP desires set the TV to be the primary display so that the dock and menu bar appear there instead of on the built-in screen.  That way full use can be made of the TV's native resolution.

It's hard to guess what the OP did or needs to do if they don't return.  I've noticed that I answer a lot of questions here, and the OP never returns to give us more info.

Basically, if you have a newer MBP and the right HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adapter, this is about as close to plug and play as you can get.  I had my new HD monitor/TV up and running in about 1 minute.  That included opening beer.

Yeah, likewise.  It's a bit frustrating sometimes!  I like to see things through to a satisfactory resolution.

Yup, same here - it just works!!!!

    Hi

Please dont let the non-returning posters & lack of adequate detail in questions put you off posting helpful comments! I need them! Anyhoo...

Ive recently bought my first Macbook pro and want to hook it up to my tv. Got the HDMI cable, plugged into TV & Mac, got the desktop screen. As mentioned above, apparently using the extended desktop is best - where/ how do I change my settings to get this 'extended desktop' ?

Basically, Im wanting to watch Netflix/ 4OD/ BBC iplayer on my tv.

If you're seeing the spiral galaxy desktop on the TV then you have the 'extended desktop'.  You can move the mouse cursor, or drag a window, off the edge of the MBP's screen and it will appear on the TV screen.  Make the TV the primary display with the dock and menubar appearing on it by going into System Preferences ➜ Displays ➜ Arrangement and dragging the small bar at the top of the image of a display to the top of the other display in the image.

Hello! I need help. I got my MBP in 2010...I've connected my MBP to a TV using HDMI cable. The screens match up perfectly. The only issue I'm having is that I can't set up a sound connection. I go to System Preferences, then Sound and under Output the tv is not listed...any thoughts?!  From what I've read I think I don't have the Thundbolt port...does that mean I won't get audio through the HDMI and I need another cable?  If so, which?  Or did I get the wrong HDMI cable?  Any input will be very much appreciated!!

I don't think that 2010 models support audio through a Mini DisplayPort (which is what you have on your 2010 model) to HDMI adapter. You'd have to use a cable connecting your audio out port to the television to get audio.

I have a 2010 MBP and i use this lead.

    http://www.amazon.com/Mini-DisplayPort-HDMI-Adapter-Cable/dp/B003OC6LWM/ref=sr_1 _1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356171829&sr=8-1&keywords=thunderbolt+to+hdmi

(this is the american amazon, but yeah it's that lead.)

I get both audio and images through this lead. the problem is, most people use adapters to connect a normal HDMI lead to their MBP, you just need a lead that goes from the TV directly into your MBP. This is the cheapest one there is, I would get a few just incase, but mine all work perfectly.

    Conor
