iPhoto or another photo handler program are normally used to sync to an iPad for pictures. If you are trying to use Dropbox for picture file sharing, then see below.

Is there some reason why Apple dropped the ball from so great a height on this one?  Not that I'm a Windows fan, but this sort of thing is sooooo much easier with Windows products.  I find the whole iTunes synch mess a real pain.  It tries to make all my devices (phone, ipads, etc) the same.  I need to pick and choose.

Since you have posted under copying pictures from an iMac to an iPad, then this would mean that you are unaware that you can select only what you want to sync to the iPad under settings in iTunes on your iMac. Create a folder or folders to sync to and then drag and drop the desired photos into them; same for iPhone etc.

I was not aware of that.  So, I can select individual photos from iPhoto to synch to the iPad?  I do know that I can select individual items to synch to the phone and iPad, but not to that amount of detail.  Also have a difficult time keeping devices separate (synching some stuff to the phone, but not to another phone or iPad).

Go to iPhoto and create names for new albums, such as vacation, birthdays, Christmas etc. Drag pictures to the albums as needed. Go to iTunes and look at your iPad, then select photos. You will see all of your named albums and the defaults, such as "last 12 months". Place check marks next to the new alblums you have made and right above that in Sync Photos form iPhoto, check selected albums, events and faces and in the drop down select no events. This will cause the iPad to only sync from your checked albums.

"Image Capture" is the application you are looking for. You can also change what application opens when you a connect your iOS device.

    Applications \ Image Capture

or just type "Image Capture" in spotlight.

It's bloody ridiculous. Why can't you just drag and drop? All the intuitive Mac functionality has disappeared with iOS, it's a very poor substitute for OSX. Hopefully iOS7 will work properly, but I have no optimism... all I wanted to do was copy a photo from my iMac desktop to my iPad. No f**king chance. Another Cupertino cockup. I'll never buy an iPhone, the iPad is frustrating enough.

If you don't want to sign up for an account, you get drag and drop your picture from your Mac to your iPad for free with Pic Share It.  You just download the free version of Pic Share It on both your Mac and your iPad.  Then you connect from your Mac to your iPad and drag and drop the photos straight out of iPhoto or the Finder on to the Pic Share It window.  It will send the photos directly to your camera roll on your iPad.

I use Transfer Platinum on both my laptop and iPad to transfer pictures and other files. It's free and I found very easy to use.

Load the Transfer app on your iPad and create a user file name/password and then load the Transfer program on your laptop. Then just copy the pics into the folder on your laptop. Open Transfer on your iPad and download them. On my laptop, I just do a "copy all" and paste them into the Transfer folder. However, on the iPad I found the download has to be done one pic at a time.

OVerall I love it and it works very well with no need to sync with iTunes. (When you do sync your iPad with iTunes, those pics are synced as well.) This works great with any file, kind of like a Cloud thumbdrive for the iPad.

For those in this discussion concerned with the "Sort" order, the criteria is in the "metadata" date that changes when you adjust the photos.

The directions below apply to Lightroom

To keep the order you created you must make an adjustment to "ALL" photos at the same time such as increasing the contrast by (1) point.

First select and change the contrast in the first photo in your collection, then select the remaining photos, click "Sync" The "Metatdata" date will change on all photos selected and will then import in the prper order.

Pic Share It - This is a brilliant app for transferring photos/videos from your computer to iPad. At last I have found the best one after hours of searching.
