Have you looked in MAC HDD>LIBRARY>DESKTOP PICTURES?

Interestingly there seem to be a few more pictures in there than show up in System Preferences (why?). But not the particular one I'm looking for, sadly.

That's very kind of you CMCSK and I wish you Season's Greetings in return Unfortunately, it's not the one I'm looking for. As for Google, all my searches come up with alternative desktops that people have created for Macs. But nowhere is there a resource of Apple's own desktop pictures. If you know of one, then please let me know.

Sadly, no. I did have the inspiration to look at the pictures on my G4 running Leopard, but they seemed to be the same set as I have on Snow Leopard (I migrated my Users and Settings from there - could that have overwritten the Snow Leopard set?).
The picture I'm looking for I actually used on a G5 with Leopard, but where the users and settings came from a Tiger machine. It was essentially an art-style picture, with a very pale, off-white, almost textile-like appearance, and its borders shading to a range of pastel colours the main one being a sort of pale plum. It's almost impossible to describe, but I guess would probably have been in either the "Art" or "Abstract" tabs.

What keywords did you use in your search? I used "Leopard os desktop pictures" and got over 2 million hits. Here are two of them - Images for os x snow leopard desktop wallpaper & Mac OS X Snow Leopard - Desktop

Thanks for that CMCSK - you know, I think one of those pictures actually shows the wallpaper I'm talking about! (It's not very clear, so I could be wrong, but this is as close as I've seen to an example).
As you can see, it's unusable, as it's just a photo of a Mac against a dark background, but it shows the right desktop, I feel sure. You probably think "How boring!", but if you saw it on a desktop you might appreciate its subtlety and unoverpoweringness (<-- invent a new word for Xmas )

I found the desktop picture I was looking for! It was on an ancient backup (so it must be a very old picture). It's called Convergence 10 and this is it:iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Core2Duo 2.1GHz 20" 3GB RAM 250GB
