Q: The dreaded error 100 - I've tried about everything

Hi!  I have an iMac v9.1 with Mac OS X 10.6.8, 8 Gb RAM and about 90 Gb  disk space.  I have been using Mac App store to buy and download applications, the last time I downloaded a paid application was in late October.

Last weekend I opened the App store to buy and download Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and got these errors:

Purchase of this item is not currently available. This item is being modified. Please try again later.

And then:

We could not complete your request. There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (100)

This what I have done so far to try to fix the error:

1. Tried to download free applications from MAS and iTunes store.  Both work.

2. Tried to download paid applications from iTS.  Doesn't work.

3. Tried to download paid applications from iTS with same Apple ID but a different computer a a different location.  Works.

4. Tried to delete /Library/Caches, ~/Library/Caches, ~/Library/Cookies, /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.storeagent.plist.  Doesn't work.

5. Tried to log off MAS and iTS, to quit MAS and iTS, to log off and on my iMac, to restart my iMac.  Doesn't work.

6. Tried to delete everything from /private/var/folders.  Doesn't work

7. Tried to reinstall 10.6.8.  Doesn't work.

8. Tried to delete Mac App Store, then install 10.6.6 and then install 10.6.8.  Doesn't work

9. Tried to log in to my iMac as a different user, including as root user.  Doesn't work.

10. Tried to edit/confirm my credit card information.  Doesn't work.

I have not created a new Apple ID, nor have I tried to change location (from Iceland to another country).  Anyway I am pretty sure it won't work since my problem seems to be restricted to my computer and not an individual user.

Should I perhaps format and then reinstall my hard disk from Time Machine as it was in last October?  Seems to me a rather drastic way to fix this error.

Please help me if you can.  Any help or suggestions (other than I've tried so far) are most appreciated.  Please note that I am not a beginner at OS X although I am not a unix guru.  As a matter of fact I have used Apple computers since 1984, starting with Apple iic :-)

    Oh, I forgot:

I don't have any of the following applications, which are supposed to prevent access to MAS:

    Net Nanny

    Little Snitch

    Hands Off

    Anti virus software.

... and I have not installed any kind of applications since my last purchase from MAS.

One more thing:  I have tried to delete and reinstall iTunes.

Dear Hackintosh.  Thanks but please read my entire post.

    I quote myself:

"5. Tried to log off MAS and iTS, to quit MAS and iTS, to log off and on my iMac, to restart my iMac.  Doesn't work."

I wonder:  Is it possible to download Mountain Lion to one computer WITHOUT installing it, then transfer it to another computer and install it there?

OK.  Now I have tried with 2 different computers and 4 different accounts.  I always get the 100 error.  Remember, I can purchase from MAS and iTS if I am not at home.

Is it possible that Apple is blocking my IP from purchasing anything from MAS and iTS?  Seems unlikely since I can download anything that is free.

Where shall I go from here?  I have e-mailed support more that ten times.  I always get the same guy who claims he is "accounts and billing" expert and states that he cannot forward my email to someone that can help.

The reason you keep getting the same advisor is due to total ownership rules, which usually is in the best interest of the customer and everyone else included.

Your problem is a bit rare, and isn't exactly related to billing so this has put your case in a bad spot.

Do you have an Apple Retail Store near by? If so, you could book an appointment for a genius bar, and then have them install Mountain Lion for you. If you've already paid for it, keep your proof handy.

No Retail store near by.  I would have to take my desktop computer for a 500 km ride.  I haven't paid anything yet since MAS always gives me the 100 error before any download begins.

Well the ARS is then out of the question.

Can you let me know what is the nationality of the MAS store account?

It is Icelandic.  I created another account 2 days ago with another email address and it worked!  I don't understand, however, why the old one stopped working.  The Apple employee I've been in touch with via Apple support does not see anything unusual about my old account.

Hmm... now I have new dilemma.  I downloaded a free trial version of a game in the beginning of December and now i want to buy the full version.  But the download is tied to my old ID where I cannot buy anything at all anymore.  So, do I need to download the game again?  Why does Apple make thing so difficult for the end user?  It is not my fault that the old Apple ID suddenly stopped working.

    It is Icelandic.

I thought as much. From my memory this has popped up time to time (in extended length)from that location.

I'm curious, is the Apple rep you're in contact with from AppleCare tech support, or from iTS, or other?

    To quote the Apple rep:

"I am an iTunes account and billing specialist and our technical support advisors are better trained to help you resolve your concerns."

But... but I can't get in touch with any technical support advisors as all my support requests are redirected to this person.

What you can do is delete the FREE version, and just re-install it using your new Apple ID.

The reason, is that only one Apple ID can own an app, and this is the Apple ID that is used to purchase it originally.

Let me know how this goes.
