This is what I do instead and you guys might find useful...

    • open iTunes and click the Songs tab

    • play any song you want

    • click the Shuffle arrows in the display at the top of the iTunes window

now it should shuffle through your whole library and anytime you want to skip the song, just click next

Also, if you click the Up Next icon it will show you what will be played next

    Hope this helps!

I know that you mean well but I am very sorry that the function that was in 10.7 and not in the downgrade to 11 is not the same as what you describe.   It is a very, very poor substitute for iTunes DJ.   The Up Next pane is very small hardly editable and try to see what you have played in the past in the order that you played them is impossible from a one list format as iTunes DJ is.  Try putting a weight on tracks with a higher rating...  it cannot be done.  Furthermore IMHO the GUI looks like something for kids not for someone who is 50.   It is very cumbersome and not intuitive as previous versions of all of Apple's product line.

I can't read through 26 pages of comments, and don't need to be told how Up Next is supposed to be just fine and I should just get over it.

Up Next is a poor replacement for one of the best functions iTunes had.

I was at a party last night and waxing rhapsodically about how my life long dream of having all my music collection at my fingertips and able to programme a night's entertainment easily was finally realized.  I can't help but compare it to flipping through albums in milk crates (but that reference may be a little too dated for some of you).

In getting ready to plan a get together today for dinner, I head upstairs to programme the days music, only to find DJ Shuffle missing, it's not a good start.

I've been using Apple products for years, I'm used to them abandoning things, and figuring you'll just go along.  I know the drill.  Unfortunately this time I don't see any reason whatsoever.  This just *****.

Ta for the tip, there are a number of people suggesting work-arounds, but none I've seen which would persuade me to go back to "11."

I've never used D.J. to "shuffle," songs, that's not, for me, it's primary function as I never actually play the songs which it throws up.

I don't want to "play any song I want," I want it to throw suggestions at me, for songs I might want to include/transfer to dedicated playlists for my ipod, which I mostly use in the car and at gigs, between sets.

The magic of D.J. is a totally random option on songs and the ability to just "refresh," at the press of a button..

It's a very simple and for me, brilliant feature..

Thanks but if you used DJ Shuffle a lot you would know that all of the suggestions in this 26 page thread are missing many of the reasons this was such a popular feature.

Let me tell you how I often used it.

Tell it to use "Jim's Faves" a playlist of about 2k songs.

Now go to the DJ playlist and depending on my mood delete some songs, re-arrange others, drop anything over 6 or 7 minutes in length, and before you know it, 100 or so songs planned for the next 6 to 8 hours.

During the party I get inspired by something someone says and decide I'd like to add a few things, no problem.

Contrast that to now, I have a window into about 20 songs, and all I know about them is title and artist.

There is no Smart Playlist that is that smart!  And shuffle is just like playing craps with 1000 sided dice.

ahhhhh i loved itunes DJ and remote, great for having parties at your house. All your buddies could select tunes.

Apple need to sort it out.

    iTunes DJ:

    • you can select all your music or any playlist
    • add and delete songs to the list
    • refresh all the list (except the songs you manually added) with a just a click
    • your list can be more than 100 future songs long (100 random+whatever number you added manualy)
    • and 100 songs history
    • use the remote application to suggest songs or rate songs

But more important iTunes DJ IS NOT RANDOM:

if you check the "Settings" in the iTunes DJ screen you will see:

"Play higher rating songs more often"

So unless someone gets Up Yours, sorry "Up Next" to work with all the ratings in some way...

    ...then any workaroud is useless

please if you enter this discussion stop suggesting things that are not even near DJ functionality

Ask Apple to bring back DJ:

I agree... all of the talent at Apple is gone... Time for a change in senior management.  They are taking excellent products that work and turning them into Microsoft Products.  I am sorry Apple, I dont spend hundreds to test your garbage.  FIx Itunes and revert back to when your products worked.  First IOS 6, then Apple Maps, Now Itunes... Really???  Rest it Peace Steve Jobs!

FYI APPLE SUPPORT.... Did you ever wonder why Windows 8 looks like MAC?  because they even respected your products.  At least Microsoft is smart and trying to mimic original apple products.  Stop changing... Change is not always good--- expecially when the only real talent at apple is DEAD.

Make sure you file a complaint about the fact. We need to have everyone and their freinds contact iTunes and let them know, "We are not happy!"

The loss of Itunes DJ is a disaster for me. As an artist, I work for hours and hours and need to cue up appropriate music ahead of time. My method is to drag numerous albums into the list and then intersperse the songs. Then I can easily bring in additional single or random tunes to break things up, add spice and keep me going. I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT I'M DOING HERE, AND NOT BE CONSTANTLY MONITORING IT. I am not an entertainer here. I am doing work, and Apple has DECEPTIVELY TAKEN AWAY ONE OF MY PRIMARY TOOLS. THIS NEEDS TO BE RESTORED!!

It's totally nuts, who are their customers?  How to they bring in the Voice of the Customer?  Why get rid of something that has 26 pages of protest?  I've put in several complaints on the itunes customer feed back link, what ever it is.

bring back the DJ!!!!  It's all I ever use..Crap!

Bottom line iTunes lost guests ability to request songs using their own personal device you can't have 100 people at one computer all trying to play "the song they want" next it just won't work, it's impossible to vote why is it we have no direct connection to apple.

26 Pages (Nearly 27) by 2013!!! I have also made many complaints and have even sent an email to "Tim Cook".

This is crazy, WHY can't they respond??!!?? This company has THE most profits In THE WORLD yet they just don't listen. Small & Good, Big & Bad... Why is there a premium on apple products, just look at the price and power of this beast: http://moourl.com/beastpc, compare that to any mac that is in any kind of affordable mac range, IT BEATS IT - beats my 2-month old MBP, EVERYTHING!! Compare that PC to a 8-core Mac Pro… Not updated since 2010 (properly, there was an update in 2012 but it was a JOKE!). Come on apple! This iTunes busness with 26 pages is mad, this "THE best iTunes ever" REALLY?!? Screen Shot 2013-01-01 at 9.00.52 AM.png

Perhaps someone with the means of creating a website to promote the want of iTunes DJ being brought back could catch apples eye. Maybe even go the Facebook route, if it gets big enough we can hope it will be solved soon.

Lets use the power of the Internet.
