Q: Loud Fan MacBook Pro 13"

My macbook fan is so loud and I am just on the internet with one tab open.  I closed all of my other apps on my dock and it is still loud.  Is there something wrong?

Sometimes this problem can be solved with an SMC reset:

 

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

 

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
  3. Remove the battery (to remove the battery -  click here: MacBook or MacBook Pro)
  4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Release the power button.
  6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
  7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

 

Still having problems? Replace steps 6 and 7 with the following:

 

  1. Reconnect MagSafe power adapter.
  2. Press the power button to turn on the computer,
  3. Then reconnect the battery.

 

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

 

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    depends how long its been closed for i mean the computer might take a while to cool down

     

    also depends how hot your environment is

     

    if it's rested on a bed or something that might be lowering its ability to dissipate the heat

    The apps have been closed for a while, I only really use iPhoto, Stickies and the Internet.

     

    It is on my lap, should it make that much noise?

    Nope definately not.

     

    Most people will tell you to do a SMC reset, not sure if it actually does anything though lol.

     

    What model of MBP is it? Under those conditions with only a couple light programs running I would say there is a problem and you should take it to Apple for help if you are still under warranty, that's what its for
