Is this a common problem?  Took me quite some time to figure out its the cable, not my wall outlet, surge protector, or the adapter that came in the box - its the lightning cable itself.  Now I have to figure out how to get another cable while my iPad is at 19% power.  I'm not happy - whoever is in charge of quality control should be fired.  has anyone else had this problem?  What about replacement cables - are they also faulty?

Hopefully you are near an Apple Store and get this faulty cable exchanged easily. Everything in the box is subject to the 1 year Apple warranty and you will have no issues getting a replacement free of charge. It is not a common occurrence for cables to be bad out of the box. I have not ever had or seen this issue so I can only go by my experience. I would take the iPad, the charger, and the faulty cable to the place you purchased the device and test it before walking out with a new cable. You definitely want to make sure that everything is working before you leave. As a suggestion, try holding the sleep/wake and home button down for about 10 seconds. Continue to hold and ignore the red slider. When the Apple logo comes up release the buttons and wait for the device to power up again. Now try the charging once again and see if it works. Sometimes iOS devices won't charge when plugged in and a hard reset gets things working again. Worth a shot before you take a trip to the store.
