Hopefully you are near an Apple Store and get this faulty cable exchanged easily. Everything in the box is subject to the 1 year Apple warranty and you will have no issues getting a replacement free of charge. It is not a common occurrence for cables to be bad out of the box. I have not ever had or seen this issue so I can only go by my experience. I would take the iPad, the charger, and the faulty cable to the place you purchased the device and test it before walking out with a new cable. You definitely want to make sure that everything is working before you leave. As a suggestion, try holding the sleep/wake and home button down for about 10 seconds. Continue to hold and ignore the red slider. When the Apple logo comes up release the buttons and wait for the device to power up again. Now try the charging once again and see if it works. Sometimes iOS devices won't charge when plugged in and a hard reset gets things working again. Worth a shot before you take a trip to the store.

No - its junk. I tried the hard boot last night - failed. My now ran down power all the way so I only have the read "plug me in icon". I just plugged it in - 45 min later - no charge, no change. When I plugged it into my computer with iTunes it didn't recognize the iPad last night - didn't have a failed to connect or failed to charge message, just no message at all.
the nearest Apple store is 1.5 hours away - then I'd have to fight the last minute crowds. I don't have the minimum of 4 hours it would take to deal with this today. The local Mac dealer I bought from is only 30 miles away but they are closed for Christmas Eve, so I can't get this fixed until Dec 26 at the earliest.
I suppose I can go by WalMart and see if I can buy a 2nd cable, but that's not really the point - the point is Apple, which prides itself on product presentation, customer service, etc. has really dropped the ball on this. Even if I called the Apple store to complain, and ordered a replacement, it coudn't get here before say Thurs / Friday.
thanks for the tips though - maybe they will help someone else.
