I suggest you run -> Migration Assistant and transfer all your data, not just iTunes.

thanks Chris. Most of the essential programs have already been installed - it is just the iTunes that are the major concern. There is lots of information on transfering from computer to iTunes but not much on iTunes to computer. There are thousands of songs involved.

I've recently transferred iTunes from a PC to my to a new Macbook Pro which I did by copying the iTunes folder to an external hard drive and then importing the music from there. I have close to 25,000 songs and it worked fine.
You will need to manually copy over the artwork folder afterwards.

You can copy only your User folder using Migration Assistant.
This will bring over all your user data (emails, application settings, bookmarks, Music, Movies, Documents, etc.)
Copying the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder will copy the entire iTunes library.
This is done when using Migration Assistantl to copy your user folder.
