Welcome to the Apple Community and a merry Christmas.

That's correct, you can't change an iCloud email address, is that what you are trying to do.

No, I am trying to sign up to my mail account within iCloud and am using my Apple ID user name as my iCloud email address but it seems not to be accepting it.  I continue in the loop of "cannot change my address once creating it". I am challenged with the computer there is no doubt.

    (If I understand you properly).......

If you have already created an iCloud address when creating an Apple ID, then you only need to log into iCloud at system preferences > iCloud and check the Mail option there. This should set up your account in Mail.

Thanks for your responses. When I go to iCloud and check the mail option I am prompted to choose a iCloud email address. I choose my Apple ID user name and enter OK then it reminds me I cannot change my name, which i am not, i choose create which is hilighted, and then we go back to the choose iCloud  email address, ect.

The iCloud email has to be an @iCloud address, it sounds as though you created your Apple ID with an address from another provider and are trying to enter this as your iCloud mail address, would that be correct.

Yes, that's the problem. When you activate iCoud mail in system preferences, you are asked to create an email address that ends in @iCloud.com to use with iCloud mail, it's asking you to create one.

I have tried creating a number of different email addresses ending in the @iCloud.com and it continues to  highlight ok which i click on, then the warning that I cannot change the email address once it is created, and the highlighted create, which I click on and then it goes back to creating a new email. I am stumped. I think I will have a friend look at it tomorrow.Hopefully we are part way to the answer.  Merry Christmas! and thank you for your help!

I had the same problem and realized that I have 2 apple ids.  One with ending in @me.com and one I created with my gmail account.  I forgot I had the @me.com ID  when I created the apple ID for itunes and am now stuck with  2 Apple IDs which is creating a new raft of issues. My iphone keeps requiring me to put in my password. Ahhhhh!

I have exactly the same problem as you. Did you ever get a solution?

When I went through the log in process for the account attached to my @me.com and was asked for password help, I didn't realize they would send it to my icloud email. Once I found the email, I was able to change the password. To simplify I made the password the same  as my other apple gmail/itunes account.  The first couple times I used apps or my iphone tried to sync I got pop ups that said there was a log in conflict. When I  changed the  passwords that had been saved in my preferences, everything started to work smoothly.  Good luck!

    Thanks for your reply Summerfleur.

I have several AppleIDs but this is the only one that I can't create an email account for. I've tried different combinations some of which are rejected as already being allocated. It then offers some suggestions one of which includes the original email that I had requested! When I selected it I then got the same error message. So I'm still at square one.
