Good evening everyone.

A week ago i've installed a new copy of Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1) on my MacBook.

Everything work fine until i activated FileVault. Previously the system started without any problems but now i get one or more Kernel Panics in the starting phase.

The same error also occurred in the old installation of Mac OS X 10.8.1, for this reason, I've reinstalled OS X.

After the system has restarted properly (usually after one or two attempts) appears an error report from OS X with the following content:

I do not know why these errors could occur, maybe you even have any idea what that might be.

Try booting to the OS X Recovery HD partition (hold Command-R at startup to get here) and use the Disk Utility tool to check both the hard drive and the boot volume for errors. Fix any errors that show up, and see if the problems persist.

  • 3. Re: Kernel Panic at startup

So, I've checked the disk for errors, here were also found several errors. These have been successfully repaired but already at the next reboot a new kernel panic occurred. When I compare the two error reports I can't see any difference.

By the way, I get the following screen when my problem occurs:

    IMG_0082.jpg

As proposed in the links above, I try to run the system without external devices for a while.

I announce myself again when the next reboot panics again...

Time to run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, at least twice, followed by running Rember.

  • 5. Re: Kernel Panic at startup
    iMovie95 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Okay, than i'll do that now.

By the way, the last Panic occurs

    Wed Dec 26 23:05:25 2012 CET

I've runned MacBook a few hours on Boot Camp.

I'll get back after the completion of the tests.

  • 6. Re: Kernel Panic at startup
    iMovie95 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

All right, I've tested my hardware the whole day long with AHT, 8 extended tests and Rember, 22 complete tests and for safety, I also have worked with Memtest86, also 22 extended tests. All three programs doesn't show any issues. So I think I can exclude that as a error source.

  • 7. Re: Kernel Panic at startup

Then, since no 3rd-party kext is involved, I suggest trying Topher's suggestion and, if still no go, reinstall the OS.

  • 8. Re: Kernel Panic at startup
    Barney-15E Level 8 Level 8 (35,295 points)

Being that it was the Power Management kext that was last loaded, I might try resetting PRAM and SMC. I don't think I've ever heard of a KP caused by those. Usually it just won't boot.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

Note that the Apple KB article (baltwo's first post) on KPs suggest installing onto and external and trying to boot from that. I would start with baltwo's suggestion of reinstalling, then try the external.

All right, resetting PRAM and SMC changed nothing, I'll try reinstalling OS X now. Here's my last panic, just a few minutes ago:

I have the exact same symtom on a Macbook Pro.  The backtrace, kext, and kernel version are the same as the original poster's.  My OS install was a fresh install (i.e. not an upgrade).

Good evening and happy new year everyone.

Well, currently I'm working again under OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I've tried to reinstall Mointain Lion once more time and again the same problem. Now I installed everything from my included System Discs and currently I'm

re-downloading Mountain Lion OS X Lion from the Mac App Store... By the way, the system runs under Snow Leopard again as desired. I can't post my last Panic, I've forgot to save it before formating my Hard Disk.

I'll contact you when I'm working with Mountain Lion again.

As far as I can remember the problem doesn't occurs by an update installation from Snow Leopard to Lion to Mountain Lion.

    Hello everybody!

I want to ask if something new is revealed. Since I no longer needed FileVault and left it off, there wasn't any problems. Today I re-enabled it because i've need my MacBook on Monday for my seminar. Well, I've re-enabled FileVault and barely the system reboots, the problems are back! On the first boot. Meanwhile, I have a new hard drive. Even then, the problems still exist. It makes driving me nuts!

    Here is the panic-log:

Should I send a bug report to Apple?

Yes. File a bug report with Apple. If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, bypassing marketing and sales, send a bug report (or an enhancement request) via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, register as an Apple Developer—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your report or request. You'll get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering and you'll be able to track its status.

Additionally, contact Apple support and see what they say. I never use FileVault with my desktop machines and don't have any portables, so can't address that issue.
