You can try resetting the printing system:

Have you tried using Image Capture to scan?
Try checking the Epson web site to make sure you have the most current driver installed.
From the threads I've read, you aren't the only one having this problem. It seems like the manufacturers aren't doing a great job of keeping the drivers up-to-date.
