i think my brain is locked up here but i am trying to do a keyword search (entry box on left hand side of aperture UI) and i am getting results for Projects and Folders but not for files/images.

am i just not thinking correctly and there /should/ be results shown for individual images/files or is this done in some other way...?

can't find some images and this is a bit aggravating.

Keywords are only placed on images. You can't keyword a folder and while projects can have descriptions they can;t have keywords either. So it's hard to tell what you are doing and seeing.

If you described in more detail what you are doing and how we might be able to help. But in general keyword searches are done using the Keywords rule in the search box or smart filter

    hi frank.

    thanks.

so, say i have an image titled "metal architecture publication cover" and i cannot find this image. if i have not gotten to the point where everything is organized so that i can put keywords on all (some?) of my images - is there a way to search for where this image is in aperture...?

or maybe i am misunderstanding something?

i mean, i have a couple of images i need to find in here /somewhere/...

    thanks

If you want to find an image in the library by file or version name then you need to search for those rather then a keyword. In that case the rule is Aperture Metadata

The you can select Version Name

    or select File Name

Jon, probably you are using the wrong search field:

The search field on the left hand side (in the insector) searches for library items (folders, projects) and the search field in the Browser (right hand side) searches for individual images.

As long as your "metal architecture publication cover" is not contained in the keywords, enter it into the browser search field for a textual search.

added: I see, Frak already explained the text search for filenames, but here is my screenshot anyway; you can search for any text anywhere by simply typing into the search field:

    hi frank. thanks.

can you just walk me through this?

do i need to pre-select anything in the pane on the left (like Library > Projects)? do i run a pulldown from the Metadata pulldown menu item...?

or i guess i pull up the Metadata HUD?

    thank you....

    hi leonie.

can you just please walk me through this? i am finding this very tricky.

so - do i have to click on Library > Photos to get it to search file names? i mean, if i have Library > Projects selected and i put in "metal" i get results that show Projects (probably obvious).

but if i select Photos - i am getting a long beachball hang and then when i click on the entry area it is currently showing "Unrated or better" - and then i get a sort of ghosted second or two showing some HUD display. then i click in the box again and i get the ghosted HUD display.

then i click on the X and i get the box to be cleared and i get to enter "metal" but this seems to show all my /images/ that are in PROJECTS (?) that are named with "metal"?

i saw the HUD display that seemed to be a FILTER HUD?

should i be using this to filter IMAGES by a /word/ in the filename (which is what i need)?

i mean, i think i have to make sure my pick order is correct or i won't be doing this correctly...

    thank you...

The answer depens on what to want to find and where. It is hard to give ageneral answer. Frank already did that beautifully.

Searching anything simply has two steps:

    • In the Library Inspector select a library item to be searched - a folder, a project, an album, or the "Photos" view.
    • In the Browser set a filter to reduce the set of  images displayed:
      • you can simply enter text into the search field; then any images that has this text anywhere (as caption, as filename, as version name, or as Project name) will be selected. See the screenshot below on how to search for the text "Oahu" in a project with Hawaii images.
      • If you need a more refined search, click on the looking glass icon to bring up the search HUD; then proceed as in Frank's screenshots. This way you can say exactly where you want the text to occur - as file name or as version name.
