One of the more unhelpful strings around, but since this pops to the top of Google searches, wanted to provide some information that could allow people to work around this issue if they read this string.
From reviewing the posts on other sites there is currently an issue ongoing with individuals with new iPhones not being able to connect to Yahoo Mail using the Yahoo specific email setup option. My added contribution to this issue is that I've replicated this issue with other devices running iOS6, in fact, and not just new devices. On devices I've been using to access yahoo email for some time, they continued to get Yahoo Mail just fine after I upgraded to iOS6. However, if I now delete that working account and immediately try to re-add it using the Yahoo specific option my other devices (iPad3, iPad2, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4) all start to exhibit the same symptoms.
Interestingly, like in the link above, I am able to get to my Yahoo email accounts by avoiding the Yahoo specific setup option and instead choosing "Other" when setting up email. Here's what does seem to work.
1.) Delete the yahoo mail account on your iphone/ipad.
2.) Add mail account using "other" instead of "Yahoo!" and setup as IMAP account.
3.) Use the following information:
- username MUST include @yahoo.com at the end
- incoming server = imap.mail.yahoo.com
- outgoing server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com
- always retype your password
Obviously, this demonstrates something is broken in the initial account set up process for the Yahoo specific option in iOS6 that isn't broken in the "Other" email process when it's set up manually.
One option is that Yahoo's servers aren't accepting authentication properly from the iOS device trying to verify the account information. However, since Yahoo's servers *do* accept authentication from the "Other" email setup process, it seems unlikely to me that Yahoo's servers would treat these IMAP requests from the same device differently.
A plausible (and I think likely) option is that there is broken Apple code in the Yahoo specific email setup option that isn't broken in the "Other" email setup code. Perhaps something changed in Apple's code for the Yahoo specific setup option that causes it to send out malformed requests or not handle return authentication confirmations properly? Don't know.
Regardless, seems to me this isn't as clear cut a case as "It's a Yahoo problem" at least with the current manifestiation of this issue.

I was getting the same message "server unavailable" when I tried to add my yahoo account to my iphone (I tried adding for a couple of days). I read somewhere that if you change your email password (on a desktop), your account could be added without fail. I changed my password, and what do you know... it worked. Give it a try. Worked for me.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have spent a great deal of time trying to fix this yahoo mail issue and have looked at countless threads and sites and your answer is the only one that spelled out how to add the account via the "other" option.
Execellent advice that worked and was easy to follow for a newbie.

I had the same problem and this was how it was solved.
I have iphone 4s and I needed to sync my contacts with my yahoo account.
I went to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, clicked Add Account, clicked Yahoo.
Below is an example.
IF this is your email address: email@example.com
This is how it will be filled:
Password: Your password
Description: This is will automatically filled by the phone
So under Name, I will always fill it with whatever is the name of my email address, minus the @yahoo.com
If the email is SSM@yahoo.com, then I will key in SSM under Name.
And everything works!
Well, at least for me.... and I could sync my contacts...
Under "Other", I can't do any contacts sync...which is frustrating...
I have a few hundred contacts... !

Just got the phone and pulling my hair out over this error message..I tried everything I could think of to correct it..I even deleted my mail account on my new 4S and re-added it (turning the phone off in between)...nothing worked...was ready give it back(!)...until I read your correction...Thanks a million!

I was experiencing the same problem. Getting the message "server unavailable". I saw in a previous post that someone had deleted their Yahoo mail from the settings menu on their iphone, reset their Yahoo password on their desktop and then added their Yahoo account back to their iphone. I tried this and IT WORKED!

While the solution of using "Other" and entering all the server information manually worked for me, it would not allow me to sync anything by my mail and my notes with Yahoo!
I wrote to Yahoo! asking for help, and they sent me to a typical troubleshooting page with a bunch of, "have you tried turning it off and on again?" steps, but on that page it said:
if the steps on the help page did not fully resolve your issue, I'd suggest following these additional steps to continue troubleshooting:
- Set up your Yahoo! Account on your iPhone using the Yahoo! option. Please make sure that you enter your new password when setting up the account.
- Make sure that your iPhone is not set to Fetch new mail manually. To verify this, please take the following steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Select Fetch New Data.
- Ensure that Push is ON.
I had "Push" turned on, but I had "Fetch" set to "Manually."
When I changed it to something like "Every 15 Minutes," it started working perfectly, and it allowed syncing of all the Yahoo! features (mail, contacts, reminders, calenders and notes).
Maybe this will help some of you if you need to sync your Reminders, Contacts, etc. as well.
