I am looking for some additional strong horn sounds to use in Logic with my midi keyboards. I have the Apple Jam Pack -- Orchestra but I am looking for some additional horn sounds. Any recommendations?

I know what you mean about the brass sounds in the Jam Pack - they're not that bad when you put a few different sounds together, but obviously brass sounds are much harder to emulate because of the unpredictable nature of the way the sound is produced, unlike the more easily reproduced woodwinds. I'm currently using the Garritan Jazz and Big Band package, which uses the Aria audio engine - not top quality, but an improvement nevertheless and the Aria engine seems to be processor and memory efficient. Arturia Brass is a different beast, being synthesised rather than sampled, but sounds good in some applications and not so good in others.

The East West Quantum Leap Brass sounds excellent and seems to be the best of the bunch from what I've discovered, so inevitably its a bit more pricey (I think they have a sale on at the moment) - I have my eye on that as a possible upgrade when finances allow. You'll find plenty of info on any of them via Google/ YouTube - there are a few others, but not that many. Happy hunting.

Thanks so much for your recommendations. After a day of listening, I decided to splurge for the MOJO Horn Section. I liked the possibilities that I heard listening to this video and amazon.com had a reduced prince.

Yeah, I had a listen to the demo examples in the link - it sounds very similar to the kind of thing you could do with the Garritan stuff - its pretty easy to use the mixer in Aria to balance, pan and effect instruments even with a single stereo instance of it, so there's definitely useful stuff going on in them both. I have a Peter Siedlaczek set of orchestral instruments which I've had for a few years, originally on a Z8 Akai sampler, now on the EXS24, and there are some great brass samples there, but they only fit with particular kinds of music. Its a bit of an ongoing quest for me - I imagine better things will come along.

I use a lot of NI stuff which I love. I don't have these horns but found this very intresting.

yeah i like both the mojo and the garritan stuff. it will be fun to play with as my band's new tracks in progress have a ton of horn sounds. i will do a lot of mixing and editing of MIDI to get them to sound how I like. i guess i am not a stickler for making them sound real. i guess i sort of like the half way point between synthetic and "realistic." more interesting. but then my music is electronic not more rock oriented.

Good to hear that you're exploring the options - I had a look at the NI one that Cowbell Bill suggested - it has some good features for different articulations and the Smart Voicing could be useful. One thing I will say about Native Instruments is that they have great customer support - something which is severely lacking with other companies - they were a great help when I upgraded my computer and really wanted to continue using the Kore based North India pack - its been discontinued by them, but they sent me an updated installer for it and were very prompt in their responses, which I think deserves a mention.

Yeah, if only we could convince the others that its actually better for everybody to maintain a sensible and human approach... ah, maybe, one day, when its all evolved somehow...
