The password is good for 15 minutes, so if the child is downloading apps one after the other, no further password is required until the 15 minutes has elapsed.Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iPad 2, iPhone 5 (iOS 6)

Maybe s/he went into Settings and set Require Passcode from "Immediately" to "After 15 minutes."

I've noticed many parents underestimate their kids's ability to memorize a 4-digit pin from a single observation.

I've had this issue also, and it's not that the password was used in the last 15 minutes. It doesn't ask for the password at all when set to '15 minutes.' It's not a big deal to me though, I only switch it to 15 minutes when I am updating a bunch of apps for the munchkins, otherwise I keep it set to ask for the password immediately, and I don't let them see the longer password or the 4 digit restrictions pass code. But there is something wrong with it and it wasn't always that way.
