Why the hesitation with reinstalling? You shouldn't lose anything, but it is good to have a bootable backup just in case.

You will have to reinstall - as it appears that you have the wrong build for your machine, I will assume that you will not be able to update - if you can't update to 10.8.2, what makes you think you'll be able to update to 10.8.3??

At this point, I am wondering how you came to have a wrong build installed. I am also out of ideas except for a reinstall. Not sure why you would not let them reinstall, but that is the only thing I can think of that will get your machine  to the point where it should be.

Yes, that is a valid build number for the Retina displays.

Until Apple unifies it all (likely in 10.8.3), you will have a custom build for your Mac.

At this point I have to admit I am too confused with all the special builds/OS versions, but according to the chart, a late 2012 has build 12C2034 - the OP has a mid 2012.

So should he wind up with the build of a late 2012 when updating?

I too have no idea. He will have to end up with custom build of some sort until it is unified for the current hardware. I would image the Late 2012 build would work with the mid 2012 hardware.

Well, I'm certainly glad to hear I'm not the only one!

Remember the good old days - there seemed to be one update offered by Software Update that worked????
