I am having the same issue. When the wi-fi drops out what color is the LED on the AirPort Extreme? I have traced mine to the router I believe by PINGing it. When the wi-fi icon goes grey the PING times out.

nope no help. It happened again this morning. wireless was down on my iMac. airport monitor showed yellow. My iPhone was connected just fine and the internet speed was within spec. It took several attempts to get the internal wireless to respond and not die right away. I think I need to call apple care. I'm thinking possibly my drivers are bad or my card is bad.

When you say the Airport monitor showed yellow (amber?). Is that on the AirPort Extreme (router) or is it the AirPort Utility? If it is the AirPort Utility what color is the AirPort Extreme LED? You state the iPhone was connected just fine, but was the iPhone using the internet through the cellular signal or through the AirPort Extreme?
Did you try PINGing the router while the monitor shows amber?

never mind. I went to apple care support and after deleting some plists, resetting the computer a few times and a few other tricks, it is working well again.
But to answer your questions: airport monitor of computer. I have a Cisco router. The iPhone was using internet and the speed test app showed normal connections and speed.
