I just tried importing several mp4 files into iMovie, all from the same source. One of them is working fine; however, three of them do not play the video. The sound plays but only the original thumbnail shot shows for the video the entire way through.

This is my first time using iMovie, so maybe I'm just missing something. Any suggestions?

Despite the fact the videos are from the same source, there is obviously something different between the ones that work and those that don't. When I encounter this problem, I experiment with converting the problem clips to another format, using one or more of the following:

    • Quicktime 7 Pro
    • FLV Crunch (despite its name, it does more than FLV)
    • MPEG Streamclip

I usually try converting them to .MOV (Quicktime) format, however sometimes using FLV Crunch to convert the clip to its same format fixes the issue - I have no idea why.

There's also an option when importing files - when you import them using a menu and not with drag-and-drop, that specifies whether the video should be optimized during import or not. Turning this on or off can sometimes make a difference, but be aware that this option can affect quality.

Trial and error is the key. Just remember to keep your original files until you're sure you've found the right solution.
