I was on a skype call when the power was lost. Once the power came back I attempted to log back into Skype and for some reason the computer says that there is not a camera installed. I have the 17-inch late 2006 Intel Core-2 1.83Ghz white iMac running Lion 10.7.5

Any help would be great.

Quit all open applications, then reset the SMC and PRAM.

    (1) Immediately after any power interruption or hard shut down (hard shut down means holding down the power button until Mac shuts off), you should perform a "Safe Boot".  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

After you see your desktop in Safe Boot Mode, restart your Mac normally.  The restart may take a bit longer than normal.  Relax and let the normal restart proceed in its own time.

If you haven't already done a Safe Boot since the power loss, do it now.

    (2) If Skype still doesn't work after your normal restart, reinstall the latest Skype version that is compatible with your Mac OS.

    (3) If the reinstalled Skype doesn't work either, consider all relevant suggestions from  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 including KarenSalena's good suggestion to reset SMC/PMU.

(BTW, Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

Thank you but none of the suggestions above worked. When I open photobooth there is a camera with a line through it; skype was reinstalled and in their tab it states "no camera"

I'm at a total loss; I used the camera for everything since 2006 and now it doesn't exist.

This isn't a problem isolated to iMacs. I have the same issue with a MBP 2011 running 10.8.2. My internal camera just disappeared two days ago (no power outage necessary since it is a laptop). I've tried all the on-line help suggestions (repair permissions, reset SMC & NVRAM), rebooted, etc. Nothing seems to bring it back. I haven't recently installed any third party software and I've removed all login items.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to try next?

    (1) When you tried Apple's suggestions, was Skype your ONLY problem?

    (2) Was the Skype problem EXACTLY the same in EVERY user account you tested?

    (3) Did EVERY Apple camera app (Photo Booth, QuickTime, iMovie, etc.) in EVERY user account you tested work properly?

If the answers to all three questions is "yes", Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.

    Start here:  https://support.skype.com/

Or, click this link for help specifically related to Mac video calls.

You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.

If nothing else works, you can even sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.

    Some additional info:

In both user accounts the camera will not work for Skype, iChat, or PhotoBooth

Under preferences in all these (3) programs in both user accounts it says

there is no camera attached to this computer.....

Is it worth a complete format and reinstall of the OS?

    (1) Yes.  However, you might want to try applying the OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo) first.  Even if you are already using 10.7.5, the Combo update may fix your problem without need for a time-consuming format and reinstall.

    (2) Unless you already have a proven Combo update workflow, here is what works for me:

    • Restart your Mac.

    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then

download and apply the latest Combo Update, for Mac OS Lion,

the current one is at: http://http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582

    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart

       that completes the Combo update.

Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of your Mac's camera.

    (3) If the Combo does not resolve the camera issue, you can try the full reinstall.

    (4) If neither (2) nor (3) works for you, your Mac may have a hardware problem.  Contact an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

First of all; a huge thank you to everyone who has helped. I have attempted "everything" that was recommended. I even formatted the HD and reinstalled the entire OS. The camera is DOA.....it does not recognize it at all.....

I have a appointment at the Genius Bar nearby this week and that will be the last try......

Well done!  They will be able to fix whatever is wrong.

Remember to backup your important data files before you go see the Geniuses.

Also, ask them to show you the working camera before you take your Mac home again.

Please let us know how it goes.  Your info may help pothers searching Discussions for this problem.

    Cheers,
