Dec 28, 2012 1:44 PM in response to Bonoraby WZZZ,A PRAM reset should take care of the Safe Booting. Cmd-Option(alt)-P-R at the startup chime. Listen for two more chimes, total 3 chimes, then let go of all the keys to finish booting.
What happens when you try to shut down? Details?

Dec 28, 2012 2:42 PM in response to Bonoraby Texas Mac Man,To startup in Safe Boot mode, you depress the Shift key at startup. Are you depressing the Shift key?
It doesn't hurt anything to boot into Safe mode. Actually it will fix some problems. See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 May take a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.
