Q: Each time I start up my Mac 10.5 I get "Safe Boot" in red. How do I get rid of this? Restart doesn't do it.

Every time I start up my iMac I get a red "Safe Boot" above my name. I cannot get rid of it by rebooting. I also have no sound or the ability to shut down. Help

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
