Q: iPod Classic

If I hold menu and select longer than normal, it just keeps resetting over and over.  After it reset 3 times I let go and it took a little while to boot and then booted up as normal instead of going blank.  I connected the iPod and tried to restore again with no success.  Should I just keep holding menu and let it chain-reset several times for the 12 seconds?

Hmm. Perhaps I've missed a step. Connect to the USB lead, then do the reset and keep holding until the screen goes black after it has restarted and shown the Apple logo.

Yep that did it.  Restore mode successful.  However I still get "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (1439)."

Boo hiss!

Back to using alternate hardware to rule out local problems.

Just tried my mother's macbook.  Both restoring through iTunes and disk utility failed.  Also now my iPod is stuck booting into a "use iTunes to recover" screen, is there any way to get rid of that without restoring, which apparently I cannot do?

The DFU reset ought to work, even if the drive isn't healthy enough to load your media onto it. Might be worth trying a few times.

Oh believe me I have tried about 10 times since putting it into recovery mode.  I'm trying the whole process from the reset to blank step again right now.

Hi, I recently got an Ipod Classic 120 gb and I have had a problem in which I would set up a playlist with all of the songs I want to put on this ipod, and as soon as I started syncing it, it would get to a certain number (ex. 79 out of 269 songs) and would just stop there and basically freeze up all of Itunes and the rest of my computer. The only way to make the computer unfreeze was by unplugging the ipod from the actual computer. Now, I have tried this a number of times, and it does not land on the same number each time when it freezes during syncing. Afetrwards, I decided to sync only a small number of songs at a time, and that seemed to work. But, it still ended up freezing at different songs. I am not sure if it's the program, the ipod or my computer... Anyways I restored the Ipod and then ran a diagnostics test and here are the results:

Retracts: 282

Reallocs: 288

Pending Sectors: 33

Poweron hours: 86

Start/Stops: 284

Temp: Current: 29C

Temp min: 46C

Temp max: 253C

Any help would be greatly appreciated on what I should do...thanks!

New or second hand? Either way I'd want to return it...253C is too darn hot!

TT, thanks for your help. My system seems clean, 3 retracts, o reallocs, 0 pendings.

My ipod 80g 5gen got wet in my gym bag a few weeks ago. I put it in rice, then charged it, it has the grey apple screen non-stop, otherwise, I am able to do the tests, I am able to reboot, I am able to put in disc mode, but nothing further..it isn't being recognized  on my computer browser or my itunes account.

My friends friend, had an ipod classic 5th gen, and her wife said it had a hardware problem, im not to aware of it, but i got it yesterday, i tried it, it gave me an error, its a white screen that says, restore ipod, use itunes to restore ipod, then the same message in 4 other languages, after that it goes to a screen that say " do not disconnect" and rarely it will swith to "ok to disconnect" then back to "do not disconnect". i read, in another apple support section, that accessing disk mode can fix reseting problems, i realized that its been going to disk mod on its own, so i followed your steps and accidently did auto test, and it passed all tests, after trying again i hit menu and did the tests, these are my results:

retracts:26

reallocs:50

pending sectors:10

poweron hours:90

start/stops:2757

so by the power on hours, it seems fairley new/very unused, so i doubt that the hdd (hard disk drive) is broken, but its very possible, i can hear the little reader going back and forth, so if this is bad tell me, and if it isnt give me help, if i fix it ill post, but until then...

Thats what i have, except my computer and itunes recognize it, i can do tests, when booting the logo and background is gray, it goes into disc mode automaticly, before it goes to disc mode it asks me to restore with itunes, wich always fails, i can run tests, but i havnt tested using headphones.... i have a 30 GB 5th gen, but i got this yesterday from my friends friend, all i know is that my friends friend husband said it has a hardware problem, i know nothing else, for more info, read post above /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\

The power on hours relates to the time the drive has been actively spinning rather than the duration of music playback.

The stats don't look too serious. Try a DFU restore. Connect the iPod to the USB cable then press Menu & Select like a normal reset but keep holding for 12 seconds. The device should reboot as normal and then the screen should go blank. iTunes should detect a device in "recovery mode" and offer to restore it. With luck this time it will be successful.

Other things to try are a different lead, a different computer or a different operating system. i.e. ask a friend with a Mac to try restoring it.
